If I download this 10.10.5 update will it remove my iPhoto again and replace it with Photos? I got rid of Photos and am back to my preference of iPhoto and I do not want to have to do this again! thanks!

If you don't wish to do it again, then be sure you backup your current system.

Photos is part of MacOS X 10.10.3, a necessary system component, and any update will most likely install it again.  But the system update will not uninstall iPhoto.  it may remove the iPhoto icon frm the Dock and add the Photos icon back.  Simply remove the Photos icon and put the iPhoto icon back, and don't launch Photos, just ignore it.

To make sure your iPhoto application isn't compromised make a copy of it before the system upgrade begins.

I am afraid to upgrade. I spoke to my computer guy and he said Photos will take over again and I will lose iPhoto. Just don't want to deal with Photos!! Problem is I can't do stuff on my phone until my computer is upgraded. this is not cool at all.

    what ever

But with all due respect your computer guy is all wet and has no idea what he is talking about - you really should find a new computer guy you knows what they are talking about

With iPhoto 9.6.1 (the current version) both Photos and iPhoto work must fine  --  some day with some upgrade iPhoto 9.6.1 will quit working but for now it works just fine

You make the choice but since you are getting bad advice you may not make the best decision

You must have iPhoto 9.6.1 - if you do not update prior to upgrading the OS - and you should not upgrade to Yosemite but to ElCaptain as it is much more stable and has many more features

This check list is useful for preparing to upgrade when you do -

Get a new computer guy.  iPhoto won't be deleted from your hard drive.  It will be removed from the Dock and will still be in the Applications folder. In order to get iPhoto 9.6.1 from the App Store you first must have some version of iPhoto 9.X on your hard drive. If you do try following Terence Devlin's instructions in this post to obtain iPhoto 9.6.1 from the App Store:

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1

If iPhoto 9.6.1 is there, close the App Store, drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash and then go back to the App Store.

Install the App from the App Store.

Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?

iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

NOTE: the key to this procedure is to move the existing version of iPhoto 9 to the Trash bin in the Dock (don't empty yet) before going to the App Store.

And I strongly suggest you take the time to learn Photos - iPhoto 9..6.1 will work but someday it will quit - and Photos generally is better than iPhoto - IMHO it makes sense to move up now
