Q: There was a problem enabling icloud backup

I have an iphone 4s running ios 9.2.  For several weeks I've not been able to backup to the icloud.  I went through some procedures I found online, including deleting existing backup, turning icloud off, resetting wifi, resetting phone, turning icloud back on.

Now, icloud won't turn back on.  I keep getting: "icloud backup failed", "There was a problem enabling icloud backup".  Get this message every time I try again.  I have a 62GB phone with 200GB or icloud storage purchased (199GB available since I deleted the backup).

Any suggestions?

    Howdy SomebodySysop,

It sounds like you are having an issue with being unable to back your iPhone up using iCloud. Is that right?

I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article - Get help backing up your device in iCloud.

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

    Best to you.

I have the same issue, started this week. I deleted all my previous backups, have plenty of storage for a backup, when i turn on backup I get "iCloud Backup Failed, there was a problem enabling iCloud backup". Tried resetting network settings, nothing will allow me to turn on my backup.

Back up to iTunes using your computer.  Then sign out of iCloud on the iPhone.  Then log back in.  iCloud should be enabled at this point.

Thank you for reply.  I backed up iTunes to computer.  Signed out of iCloud on iPhone.  Signed back in, and iCloud Backup was turned on.

However, When I click on "Back up now", I get "The last backup could not be completed".  This was the original problem and the reason I had turned iCloud Backup off in the first place.

    I have a 64GB iPhone 4S and 199GB of available iCloud storage.

Does anyone have any clue as to why this happens?

EEveryone is having the same problem.  Seems like a software problem or server problem with Apple.  Just have to wait until they fix it.  Back it up to iTunes now.

I spent this last Saturday discussing with Apple Support over IM for two hours, but to no avail.  It was a very painful experience.  Finally the rep said that he is going to escalate it internally, as it sounds like an iOS (software) problem.  The intermediary solution he offered me was to back it up via iTunes on my computer constantly 'til Apple resolves the issue.  No time frame was given yet!

I/We are so let down by Apple...

Not looking forward to deleting, uninstalling, reinstalling and re-configuring just to find out it's a problem that has to be solved internally by Apple. So far, all my attempts at those resolutions have not worked.  If anyone reading this has this problem, or has had this problem, and resolves it, PLEASE remember to post the resolution here.  Thanks!

I Have contacted Apple support twice this evening about this issue. I was finally told after doing all of the steps set out below that it's a known issue and the engineers are looking into it. I have the same issue with both my iPhone 6 and iPad Air 2. Both used to backup fine until Friday night 22nd Jan.

I've logged out of iCloud and logged back in again

    I've reset my network settings

    I've deleted old backups

I've put both devices into recovery mode, restored the devices and then restored from iTunes Backup.

None of the above have worked. It's just a case of waiting for Apple to resolve the issue and iTunes backups in the meantime.
