Q: Can anyone confirm that a square-end 85w connector can be used in a 13"MacBookPro 2012? I hate the L-shape 60w connector.

The backward compatibility one Magsafe version over another, is documented;

however at the moment, I've no access to an old bookmark covering that aspect.

A problem with some MacBook Air power adapters, is they lack power for use

with other larger power-demanding models. Early MacBook/Air used 45W power.

I've used a newer MagSafe2 with older computer equipped with MagSafe original ports.

Not sure why, but no shape adapter is needed to make it work. It's a square end 85w.

A Magsafe2 power adapter is NOT compatible with your MBP  Th MBP connection is not the correct fit with the power adapter fitting.

There are two versions of MagSafe ports. If they are the same version but just different form factors then yes, it is okay to interchange. The older MagSafe adaptor can be used with the newer MagSafe2 port with a little (easily lost) adaptor.

If the power requirements of the two computers are different there is a problem using a lower wattage adaptor with the higher need computer. It is safe to use the adaptor but while you are using the computer it will not charge as quickly.

The L shaped MagSafe 1 is interchangeable with the T shaped one.

It does quick disconnect.

The older adapters, and some quality third-party replacements

will fit and work without issue between these different models.

Usually the newer adapter is backward compatible, as is mine.

One cannot count on that, however, going forward.

Why are we still fixated on MagSafe2 connectors, nobody in this thread has one.

Of the four portable Macs here, one can use the MagSafe &/or MagSafe2.

Without the $10 adapter.

The others are powerPC with barrel-type power adapter.

No. the Magsafe has never been barrel shaped, t's the the same shape as a MagSafe, but different size

Of the four computers here, one is MagSafe (as stated) for my MacBook1.1 &

the other three are barrel-shaped for my PPC G4 PowerBook + iBook models.

The T shaped adaptor works but it is no longer available, having been replaced with the L shaped magsafe or the magsafe 2
