Jan 23, 2016 7:40 AM in response to epete22by jeremy_v,Hi epete22,
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It looks like the display on your iMac has been flickering intermittently. You've tried several good steps to troubleshoot the situation. It can take a bit of time to isolate something like this when you have to wait for it to reoccur.
I suggest testing to see if the behavior appears in two different scenarios:
- After starting up in safe mode--OS X El Capitan: Start up in safe mode.
- After starting up to OS X Recovery--OS X: About OS X Recovery.
Note that reduced graphics performance (including some "tearing" or "flashing" on parts of the screen) is normal in these modes--Limited graphics performance in OS X recovery or safe mode.
If all is normal in those two environments, next try working in a new user account for a while--How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac.
These tests can get us closer to the source of the issue so feel free to reply with more details after trying these steps.
Sincerely.
