Q: Deleting an iCloud account that doesn't exist

I am trying to delete my iCloud account from my iPhone 4S that is synced with my old iTunes email account that is no longer active. The problem is that it asks for the password in order to delete it, but it does not accept any password because the account is no longer valid. Even when trying to look up the old account or password through the "Forgot ID or Password" link, it says it cannot verify the username, even after I have put in all my old information.

I can log into iCloud.com on a desktop using the new username, but I can't change it to the new one on my iPhone 4S without having a password, which doesn't exist. So I am stuck.

Any ideas?

And what, specific, exact same issue are you having? What iOS are you running? What iCloud ID is signed on to your device? Is is an old iCloud ID you don't use anymore, or is is the old version of your current Apple ID. There are a whole slew of different things that make each of these situations unique, so you would have to take the time to specifically indicate what is happening to you and what state your device is currently in in order to get any help.

I am completely stuck.I have an iPhone 5s and I have gone through every page of this thread and tried every possible option and nothing has worked. When i go to settings>iCloud it is stuck on an apple ID that doesn't exist anymore. It is an old school email address that also doesn't exist anymore because it has expired. Find my iPhone is turned on but it's grayed out so there is literally no way for me to turn it off. I have tried changing my apple ID to the old one but it just wants me to type in a verification code that I can't get because it sends it to an email address that doesn't exist. I've even tried deleting the account without the verification code but that doesn't work either. I can't restore it or anything because everything I try requires the stupid Apple ID that doesn't exist. I don't understand how this can even be a problem, why would they make it so it automatically connects to an apple ID that doesn't exist?! If it doesn't exist then how can it be connected to it?! This is one of the most frustrating things I've ever dealt with.

common mistake, apple id exists. Account exists, email address may be gone, renamed or stayed the same and new account created, but account/appleid lock does exist.

If you know what account that is you can as worst case scenario go to icloud.com  sign in to your account and disable activation lock using instructions here

Turn off Find My iPhone Activation Lock - Apple Support

if the phone is online you can use same process to erase device before turning the lock off, but if not

you would have to restore in recovery more.

same problem with me, apple ID different from icloud id for which I do not have access to the old email address. old password not ok so I cannot store on icloud nor cancel the find my iphone therefore I cannot restore my phone on Itunes

I have spent a lot of time on the web trying to find a solution, there are some IT genius on you tube showing how to do it but I do not feel like being able to repeat it.

really looking for a solution, apple support is useless

What do you mean by you do not have access to the old ID? Have you tried changing the password via Apple - My Apple ID? Is this a totally different Apple ID than the one you are using now, or is it an earlier email address that you used to use for your current Apple account?

apple Id for itunes store is ok (mail plus password) but for icloud I am locked

    hope it helps

I still need to know the answers to:

Is this a totally different Apple ID than the one you are using now, or is it an earlier email address that you used to use for your current Apple account?

If it is a totally different Apple ID than the one you are currently using (rather than an old version of the one you are using), then you need to go to: Apple - My Apple ID and change the password. Whether you have access to the email address is not relevant. It is still an Apple ID. You need to change the password on that Apple ID so you can sign it off.

If you don't know the answers to the Security Questions for that Apple ID, then contact Apple Support to have them reset:

You are a HERO LUViNGMAMA! We tried everything and most of the answers in this thread were useless as I don't think they actually read the problem. Thanks so much!

I AM HAVING THIS SAME ISSUE.

I talked to a guy at The Genius Bar tonight.  He tried his best to help me, but we didn't get anywhere.  Apparently, Apple people have limited access to iCloud data.  Seems a little silly to me.  He told me to call iCloud support and see if they can help!  Maybe you can try that too?  If I get anywhere with it tomorrow, I'll let you know!

I have never even logged into iCloud with the Apple ID that it is saying I need to verify.  Because it's a netscape email address.  So, I had changed - in iTunes I edited my email - my Apple ID a LONG TIME AGO to what I use now.  I can no longer access "netscape.net" and apparently that is causing problems even though all emails sent to that address SHOULD redirect to AOL...  Apparently a verification email won't.

So, I am in the same boat as you.  I have an Apple ID that I do not remember the password for (because it isn't my current password), and it also no longer exists as an Apple ID in their servers/database/whatever.

I am also trying to recover notes that I deleted when I accidentally deleted email accounts associated with notes and my phone or iCloud or something.  So far I have been able to get screenshots of some of those back through different - non-Apple - software, but of course not the MAIN note that I need.  But that is beside the point to the existing/nonexistent account issue.

    Paula,

No promises on being able to help, but I can maybe try.

Are you having the same issue as dchampion and myself, or not?  If not, what is your issue?

I don't understand what you did exactly.  All of my software is up to date, I have the iPhone 6.... Where did you open FaceTime settings?  In my Settings app on my phone it isn't linked to my Apple Id, it's linked to my number.  Was this different from your situation or did you have it linked to your Apple ID?
