Q: Keyboard/Mouse frozen at login after long sleep

Every morning since I installed El Capitan, when I open my laptop, the login screen appears but my mouse and keyboard are unresponsive. The only button that works is the power button for turning off/on the screen & forced reboots, which I end up doing.

There is no beach ball of death like other people have experienced.

I've got the same issue with mouse and keyboard freezing on long sleep. I am also running VM Ware tools 7. I have upgraded to 8 and report back on if that solves the issue for me.

Thanks everyone for figuring out what was causing the crashes!

I guess you are saying upgrade VM Ware Fusion from 7 to 8. Version of VM Ware tools under Fusion 7 is 9.9.3.2759765. I checked if there are any updates in hope this might solve the issue. But cant see anything.

I don't have Fusion and I have the problem.  It happened again overnight (long sleep) and this morning the trackpad and cursor are frozen.  Any other known causes besides a bug in Apple's software I'm still waiting to be fixed?

I had this problem and it was indeed related to VMware fusion running and an active virtual machine.  It was a bit frustrating in my case as I had a lot of unsaved work open.  I couldn't even get the machine to respond by plugging in a USB keyboard / mouse, but I was able to recover using this method.

    a) SSH to one's macbook (this however needs the "remote login" sharing feature enabled in the settings).

    b) find all the process IDs related to VMware e.g. ps ax | grep -i vmware

    c) sudo kill -9 <pid> all the VMware processes (this will simply kill off the running VM, if there is unsaved data in that, you would need to connect over the network to that machine if possible).

    d) now connect the USB keyboard, (this should now work, but the inbuilt keyboard still doesn't).

I managed to save my work that way, and reboot.  Now I ensure that my VMs are suspended and VMware Fusion is closed, until such time as they figure a fix for this one.

Hope that helps anyone in my situation that doesn't want to power cycle the machine and potentially loose unsaved data....

    Chris

I have this problem as well, but I am not running any program. Has there been a solution for this problem yet?

I am having this problem with El Capitan 10.11.2 and VMWare Fusion 8.1.  AND, unlike others, the problem isn't limited to when I leave VMWare running.  Even if I suspend the VM and quit Fusion I still can't wake from sleep (keyboard/mouse disconnected).  If I do NOT use Fusion at all during a session, then the Mac Pro sleeps and wakes as it should.

    Very frustrating!

I have the same problem, and I guess it's related to VMWare Fusion in my case as well. Is there some thread on the VMWare boards where we can push the developers a bit? I have this for months now, and it's very annoying and dangerous, as I depend on a cleanly running computer with my daily business.

Same as everyone else. El Capitan (10.11.3) and VMware Fusion Version 7.1.3 (3204469). After long sleep with VMware running, no keyboard or mouse. Interestingly the clock appears up at the top and the seconds happily count away. I also get email notifications. This has now gone on for at least four months and no fix.

Same problem too. EI Capitan + Fusion 7. But I find other threads complaining the frozen keyboard/trackpad after long sleep, some of them are pretty old ones.

Like this : https://joshmccarty.com/2013/09/fix-frozen-trackpad-keyboard-macbook-wakes-sleep / , it mentions resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)  , Has anyone tried it ?
