Q: I cannot locate the "other" data stored on this mac. HELP!

I have had my mac for under 1 month.

I have added 12 gigs of photos and videos. And under 1 gig of files. (4 files to be exact)

My macbook says the 'startup disk is full'.  When I look in "about my mac" it says I have 96 gigs of "OTHER"

I have tried chatting with Apple support and my macbook wont connect.

I need help!

THANK YOU

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch,Early 2015), iOS 9.2.1

First understand what the category OTHER represents:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202867

Download from the Internet OmniDiskSweeper and Grand Perspective (both free) and open them. They will show all of your files and the respective sizes. Transfer to an external HDD the files you do not want on your Mac or delete them.

Do not forget to empty trash. Only then is space allocated for additional data.

    Ciao.

Other, is a catchall, you have several named categories listed, Other is not in any of them.

Thank you.  I cannot download anything. the startup disk is full.... I cannot export or transfer files  - because it says the startup disk is full. I cannot drag and drop anything into the trash bin - it says startup disk is full.

This is my first time using a MAC since i was in elementary school. (20 years ago).  So i'm a bit sad.  I will probably bring it into the Apple store

This MacBook was given to me as a gift to edit videos with iMovie and upload to youtube. So that's all I've been doing. IS it possible the MacBook made a secret copy of that stuff? I uploaded 2 videos. Both have been deleted. BUT I'm wondering if there is another spot I need to clean up.

    THANK YOU Oglethorpe!

Hello again!  I found something to delete and it worked - just enough room to download those two programs. BUT Apple would let me open them because they could be malware?

So i'm at step one again....

    Ok, try this:  SAFE BOOT:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

That may clear out enough caches permitting access to the MBP.

If not, try Target Disk mode:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201462

    Ciao.

ODS and GP are definitely NOT malware.  I and many others have used them often.

Get as much off the MBP HDD as you can.  There is no reason to have the HDD near capacity all the time.  Make at least 20 GB of free space.

    Ciao.

Hi again. Ok so how do i bypass the error message when i try to open those two programs?

Also i'm trying to compress a file to make more room - and there is an error message com.apple.compressor.compressorkit.errordomainerror - 1.

by the way - it was never my intent to fill up this macbook. It is intended as an editing and uploading tool. I have loads of external hard drive space. I honestly don't know what happened.

    thank again!

Connect an external HDD to your MBP via USB,

(make certain that the HDD format is Mac compatible)

Drag the movie files to the external HDD and then delete them from you MBP.

    Ciao.

    Hi OGELTHORPE!

A MILLION thank you's for ALL your help!!!!!  With the three programs - Omnidisksweeper Grandperspective and EasyFind I was able to locate the problem. Backup the original. And delete the data!!!

I think the video compressor was making a mistake because it took less than 1 gigabyte of information and turned into 96 gigs.....

thank you thank you THANK YOU!!!!!
