HT204655: Updating from iPhoto to Photos for OS X

Q: Is there a step-by-step procedure to migrate IPHOTO images to PHOTOS ?  IMAC was upgraded to El Capitan in OCT but I was not prepared for the major change that was contained within PHOTOS.

I elected to continue to use IPHOTO after upgrading to Yosemite in Oct2015 understanding I could migrate to PHOTOS at a later date.

The total number of images in IPHOTO is 8007.  In PHOTOS it is 8166 with 159 videos which indicates all images are included.  Assuming that's correct then I select PHOTOS as my main APP?

iOS 6.1.3

Your question is not clear  --  to use Photos simply click on it in the Dock and it will open - to use iPhoto click on it - each program is totally separate and can be used independently - nothing done is one is reflected in the other

As to migrating (although it sounds like you already have) this may be helpful - Notes on Migrating an iPhoto Library from iPhoto to Photos for Mac - and this - How Photos handles content and metadata from iPhoto and Aperture - Apple Support

Hopefully that helps - if not please explain what you want to do adn what you need to know clearly

My IMAC history.  Loaded El Capitan 31 Oct 2015 where PHOTOS came in and migrated content of IPHOTO.  After reading about PHOTO I decided I wanted to stay with IPHOTO instead.  Now I realize I will have to start using PHOTO at some point but I want to ensure the steps I take will be the surest/most successful approach to capture all of my IPHOTO content/metadata.

At this point all work done since OCT in POHOT is NOT reflected in PHOTO which tells me I should remove PHOTOS completely from my IMAC and then reinstall it as if for the  first time which should result in migration of the IPHOTO library.

Is this a logical approach?  Any and all suggestions/guidance is welcomed and appreciated.

Are you saying that after your initial migration of your iPhoto Library to Photos you continued to use iPhoto and added all new photos to it?  And that you now want to migrate your current  iPhoto Library to Photos, right?  If so here's what you do:

1 - move your current Photos library to the Trash bin.

2 - with the Photos app closed drag your current iPhoto Library onto the Photos icon in the Dock.

3 - your current iPhoto library will be migrated to a new Photos library which you can start using.

Note:  before migration you might want to launch iPhoto with the Option+Command keys held down and repair the library permissions and rebuild the library's database.  That will help assure a complete migration.

Do not remove the Photos application - remove the Photos library and migrate the iPhoto library again - after the migration there are totally separate so nothing you did in iPhoto (or photos) is reflected in the other program

At this point all work done since OCT in POHOT is NOT reflected in PHOTO which tells me I should remove PHOTOS completely from my IMAC and then reinstall it as if for the  first time which should result in migration of the IPHOTO library

That is correct as to the Photos library - again no installing or any other action of the applicaiton - only on the data - teh Photos library
