YouTube videos won't load on my newer 4th Gen 4 Apple TV, but they will load on my older Gen 4. Has anyone else suffered this problem? It just started this evening. Both units work with all the other apps. YouTube is such a pill. more

Jan 22, 2016 1:07 PM in response to bobngbby Russell Madden,★HelpfulI connect my AppleTV 4 to my receiver w/ an HDMI connection. My Sharp TV is from 2010, for what that's worth. I have an Onkyo 7.1 sound system (also from 2010). I have both HDMI and an optical audio connector for the Onkyo to connect to my TV. (To be honest, I don't know why that's necessary, but it's the only configuration I could set up that gave me sound as I wanted to. [I thought the HDMI alone should pass on the sound, but apparently not, or — more likely — I'm missing something.]) As far as I can tell, I don't have any issue getting 5.1 sound.
The AppleTV 4 works well; the extra memory, newer processor helped eliminate some processing issues w/ my Apple TV 3, e.g., the 3 would not stream 4k video from my computer; the 4 will. Also less buffering time (usually…).
I rarely use Siri, but it's a nice option, I suppose. Doesn't always work correctly but sometimes useful.
The touch remote is usually good but can be frustrating w/ accidental touches; though one can reduce the sensitivity in the settings. "Typing" is a pain, since the letters are linear rather than in a box. For now, Siri won't type what you say.
Besides just wanting to upgrade, I also wanted to be ready — if and when — Apple offers a TV streaming service that includes both local and national cable channels.
Don't know if any of that helps, but...

Jan 22, 2016 1:13 PM in response to Russell Maddenby bobngb,It helps. Can you still use the iPhone remote app to facilitate situations where you might need to type info? I can see how the Siri remote might lead to some problems, but I'd be willing to risk it ... probably.
And my Sony television is a 2006 model, with the older HDMI protocols. I run my Apple optical lead to the console for my Bose Lifestyle home theatre setup. That allows me to run a mechanical or wired optical out from my DVD player, and I get surround with both. I do have an optical out from my Sony TV, but I'm kinda loathe to mess around with that setup just to find out that it won't work. I seem to have memories of it not working in the past when I tried to connect a cable box, an Apple TV unit and a DVD player with only two HDMI connections. Oy. You'd think they were made of gold.
Having said that, I'm looking at a new Sony Bravia that has four HDMI inputs. And the price for these flat panel TVs had fallen so much in the interim that I wouldn't feel too bad about buying a new TV, but I hate to get rid of one that still works very well re: the picture.
Thanks for the chat.

Jan 22, 2016 1:18 PM in response to Russell Maddenby bobngb,Oh, and I agree with the idea of the Apple streaming service. We'll see if the legion of lawyers involved can ever get that figured out.
And I've bought enough Apple content now that they've pretty much got me well and truly mired in their infrastructure.

Jan 22, 2016 1:23 PM in response to bobngbby Russell Madden,This is from Apple: Set up Remote for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
If you have an Apple TV (4th generation)
Remote app is designed to provide simple navigation, text input, and control with the new Apple TV (4th generation). Features such as Siri, volume control, or using the accelerometer or gyroscope for game play are only made possible with the Siri Remote or Apple TV Remote*. With some third-party apps, the keyboard in the Remote app might not be available.

I had the remote set up w/ my iPad 3 but never really used it. Got an iPad Air 2 last month but haven't downloaded the Remote App for that yet.
I'm not enough of a sound tech to comment much on your TV/receiver setup. I suppose you could use an HDMI switch, but that may be more hassle (though much cheaper…!) than a new TV.
FYIW, I bought my first Mac in 1984...
