Jan 22, 2016 2:09 PM in response to iMondoby Phil0124,Because the Mac Apps and iPad apps are different to each other. iPad Apps cannot run on a Mac and Mac Apps cannot run on an iPad.
If you need to run iMovie on a Mac you need to get the Mac App version separately.

One more question, I have a Mac that has iMovie'09, how can I upgrade it to the latest? I thought Apple bundled quite a bit of software on their machines?

Jan 22, 2016 2:26 PM in response to iMondoby alex349,I may be mistaken, but I think on that Mac that has iMovie '09 you can open the Mac App Store, go to the Updates tab, and it will offer to update iMovie to the latest version, which is shipped only on the Mac App Store. At that point any other Mac that is logged in to your account in the Mac App Store would then be able to download iMovie for free from the Purchased tab of the Mac App Store.

Jan 22, 2016 3:38 PM in response to iMondoby Phil0124,You cannot update iMovie 09. You can update iMovie 11 and beyond for free to the newest one.
You'll just need to buy iMovie from the Mac App Store.
iMovie, and the rest of the Apps are free with the purchase of new hardware. If you did buy a new Mac and are not getting iMovie and the other Apps for free, try signing out of the Mac App Store and back in.
