Q: recovery mode does not work

Ok, so I upgraded to El Capitan. Then I went to expand my bootcamp partition. I was able to resize my Mac HD partition which left some un-allocated space. When I logged out to go to Windows to absorb that space, my Windows partition was no longer available. I have read that I need to go to the Recovery Mode to turn off the SIP but I am just hanging at the grey apple. Help!

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)

Before you turn off SIP and possible cause further complications, can you post the output of the following Terminal commands?

    diskutil list

    diskutil cs list

sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0

    sudo fdisk /dev/disk0

The "sudo" commands will prompt for your password, and it will not be echoed back. You may also see a warning about improper use of "sudo" and potential data loss due to "abuse" of the command.

Apple does not officially support resizing of disks which have Bootcamp/Windows installed - Boot Camp: Resize the Windows partition .

It may be possible to recover Windows. Please post the output of

    sudo dd if=/dev/rdisk0s5 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C

This will show the first block of the BC Partition.

If Windows was bootable, how were you planning to absorb the space into Windows? It will help decide what the next step will be.

Honestly... I don't even remember anymore. This process started on Tuesday when I thought I could do something on my own by reading online, but was sadly mistaken. Then my brain was fried.  I don't consider myself a computer person at all and much less a gamer, but I do really enjoy my SWTOR when I can. During the last update, I noticed that my partition was reaching its limit so I decided to try and fix that. I read somewhere that I could go to the Disk Utility and so forth. I wanted to try it. Then...while reading, I realized that I still had OS X 10.6.8 and possibly needed to upgrade that.. so I took a side trip. Now I am here and don't know what to do.

Can I suggest a simpler route, if possible? Remove the extra partition you created. Remove BC/Windows using BC Assistant (only) after you back up your important files from the Windows and OSX side. Re-install Windows with a larger partition size and re-install your applications. It will save you a lot of trouble and upcoming problems.

If re-installation of Windows is not possible, then we can explore other options.

I will take any suggestions you have. If you could walk me through it I would really appreciate it. Is this the best place to continue this discussion?

Also, will this fix problems accessing recovery mode (even though I may not need to now)?

    1. We should fix the SIP first. This is needed to get a backup of your Windows files.

    2. Does Command+R work? If not, does Command+Opt+R work?

    3. If Command+Opt+R works, you can install OS X on an external drive - OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support, How to install OS X on an external drive connected to your Mac - Apple Support . This can be used to work around the SIP issue. If the version offered by Internet Recovery is older than the current version on your internal disk, you may also need to upgrade it from the App Store to match the internal disk version.

Ok, so I am at the Mac OS X Utilities with the following options:

Restore from Time Machine Backup  (which I don't think I did)

Reinstall Mac OS X (Set up and install a new copy of Lion.)

Please use a wired connection during Internet Recovery in the future, but if it is working now, leave it running.
