Seems like your signal is not working well. What network are you actually connected to? You mention 5G, then you mention Wi-Fi, which is it? If it is not working well by updating OTA, then I suggest you connect the device to the computer and iTunes and update that way.

    4G Vodafone network

2G and 5G Virgin fibre wifi

this is phone specific as I updated by iPhone5 earlier usig the wifi since there is no sim in that phone.

This iPhone 6 Plus comes up with the error message whether wifi is turned on or off. Occurring over days.

How are you attempting to update the phone, OTA, or with iTunes? If OTA, then is Wi-Fi on? You updated the iPhone 5 with no SIM, is that what you are saying? So this Wi-Fi, is this some type of public Wi-Fi? I understand this is phone specific, that is why I asked if you could try iTunes. Hard to tell why it is disconnecting, but the first troubleshooting step is the network it is connecting to.

I tried updating using both Vodafone 4G OTA and home super fast fibre broadband 5G

there is nothing wrong with the home network.

Wwhy on this occasion should I need to connect to iTunes to update when all previous updates have been completed OTA or via Home wifi.

As I said my old phone without the SIM card updated fine over the home network Today and still the iphone6 plus will not update. Even when this error comes up its wrong since I can still use safari so there is no disconnection.

Sometimes errors occur on individual devices when updating OTA. I was not implying there was anything wrong with the home network, I was trying to understand it. Again, as you have correctly understood, this is an individual device issue, and I've provided you with steps to try and correct it. Thing can happen that are beyond our control. For some reason, your device is not wanting to update OTA this time.

I will have to find the time to connect it to iTunes And see if that works then. Thanks for your time and replies.

I had this issue and fixed it by deleting the download and retrying the whole process - no need to use iTunes.

To delete the download on your phone, go to Settings/General/Storage & iCloud Usage/(Storage) Manage Storage - find the download in the list that eventually populates (it has the logo of the settings app), tap it and tap delete. Now go all the way back to Settings/General/Software Update and try again in the usual fashion - you will need >50% battery and a wifi network as per.

    Hope that helps
