Q: Sometimes there's no sound on notifications after iOS9 update

So I updated my iOS devices (iPhone 6Plus, iPad 4 and iPod Touch 5) with the new iOS 9 on 17th September and since then I have noticed a weird thing. For most of the apps such as whatsapp, viber, Facebook Messenger, Gmail and some games (for which I have set the notifications as active), there's no notification sound but still the notification comes up on the screen. This happens even with the native messaging app (whether I send a text or iMessage). When there's another notification from the same app, then notification plays the sound or at times the sound stutters for multiple notifications from same app (e.g.: whatsapp group texts).

So anyone else facing the same issues? Does anyone know a solution? I have tried restarting, restoring and updating my devices to iOS 9 again and the mute buttons on my iPhone and iPad weren't ON while facing the issues. The volume is at max level.

I guess its already time for Apple to release iOS 9.1 fixing the issues.

iOS devices that were updated:

iPhone 6Plus - 128GB

iPad 4 - 64GB

iPod Touch 5 - 16GB

iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 9

So I've got good news. Like many others before I've found a solution working well for me:

The bug - and I definitely call it a bug - is related to the system volume control.

No matter what you have set in your sound-settings, if you have turned off the main volume control (not the sound of the ringtones) you won't hear any notification sounds.

I normally have turned off the main volume because I sometimes watch videos in the underground and I don't want to disturb others with the video sound.

So it happens, that I forget to turn it on afterwards and each time this is, there are no notification sounds at all.

When I turn it on again, everything ist fine.

Have a try, if this works for you as well, but don't frightened if the music is too loud next time you use apple music ;-)

This is definitely a bug, because the main-system-volume should be handled independently of the notification sounds...

    Groovyzep,

How did your mega texting test on 9.3 beta 1.1 go?

I am thinking of taking the plunge and upgrading to that one when it comes out...

Yes, Conyous, I assumed you weren't using the new beta. I will bear your suggestion in mind.

Actually, I was asking Groovyzep about tests he referred to earlier on the 9.3 beta 1.1.

this is not the problem we are talking about though.

the problem is intermittent notification sounds with phone just sitting there then another notification

comes in and a sound plays and phone is just sitting there still then another notification and it doesn't

play a sound and phone is still sitting there untouched.  it is totally random.

I place my phone on table.  i get my OTHER iphone  and i text that phone.  out of 100 texts

    17 texts had no sound

nothing was touched. phone is just sitting there on table the whole time during this test.

if you get NO SOUNDS that is another issue.  that means a setting like do not disturb is on

or the silent mode switch on side of phone is on etc..   or what happened to you

    >>>>>This is definitely a bug, because the main-system-volume should be handled independently of the notification sounds...""

    totally agree

9.3 beta 1.1  is MUCH better is many areas than 9.2.1

faster and smoother GUI animations  and cool new features like nightshift.

(you can adjust your screen to be warmer at night to help you sleep better

or to just flat out fix your screen colors as some phones tend to be too blue)

some ringtones have bad headers.    Apple sticks to ISO 100% so i suggest you run the ringtone

through a ringtone fixer app.     This actually is not iOS fault.   Though the itunes store should

test ringtones but they do not. Just too many of them.

Uhm Mr Zep, I have had the same Ef-N ringtone on 3 phones. It's not the ringtone boss. BTW, please explain why my iPhone 6S gets locked on vibe also, or gives no sound notification at all, I've actually seen my phone get texts and no alert. Please refrain from regurgitating old information. The problem is with the IP6S running any iOS 9.

HAhahahahahahahahhahahahahahah.... So by your intellect, because your phone doesn't have an issue, no one can have an issue. Lol!!!!

not at all.    You miss again the most obvious.

If all your ringtones work but that 1 does not then the difference is in the  FILE not the phone.

Fix the file to match the working ones and guess what you get a working ringtone.

what is even more hilarious you say "because your phone doesn't have an issue, no one can have an issue"
and yet you just got done saying MY OTHER PHONES do not have an issue with it so it must be my 6S   hahaha

my word boss man wake up!   lol

I've noticed that Notifications stops working when you reset your iPhone holding two buttons (Home button (big circle below the screen) and the Sleep/Wake button).

After just turning off and on as regular with just Sleep/Wake notifications appeared to be working.

I've also cleared all notifications on the notifications screen. Maybe it helped too.
