Q: OS X El Capitan 10.11.3 update will not work

Hi,

I've tried several times  to get this update to download, but every time I try, my iMac will not restart. I have to shut the machine down using the power button. Any suggestions gratefully received.

With thanks

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014), OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)

I had a more serious issue with the 10.11.3 update.  It was available via the Mac App Store and I clicked update.  The result was a MacBook Pro 2013 Retina that would no longer boot!  I had to restore the machine from my last TimeMachine backup...which was only 30 minutes old.  I waited 24 hours and tried again today only to end up in the SAME state.  I've just restored from TimeMachine AGAIN and will try using the download link above instead of the App Store download.

I Have a macbook pro mid 2009. Tried updating via appstore three times and always got stuck half way through having to recover from time machine. i have now tried updating using combo update, but the install bar is stuck at 100%, white screen with apple icon. Won't even restart. Been like this for several hours.

maybe my machine is just too old, even if apple reports the update works in these computers from 2007 and later.

do you have enough disk space?

did you ever get it started.

maybe you could post the results of this, http://etrecheck.com/#about

might gives us an indication as to what might be hindering the install.

yes 99Gb free is more than enough. 4Gb ram is minimum really ( Apple says 2Gbs but thats really not enough ) but I guess you don't want to buy

more ram for such an oldie.

have you any anti-virus apps on the mac, or any performance apps like Clean My Mac etc, these are not really recommended

as they can cause more trouble than they claim to fix.

check that your third party apps are compatible with El Capitan and have updates available.

or could just be that the disk is getting tired and just not responding as quickly as it once did.

did the etrecheck report flag up any issues, such as launch daemons.

I don't have any anti-virus apps on mac or any performane clean my mac.

Also Etrecheck didn't flag any issues.

So i believe the option of having a tired disk is probably correct. I guess I'll have to stick to this software version for as long as it works.

Well...here we are again with the 10.11.4 update and the SAME issue has happened.  Tried to upgrade and bricked my user profile.  I was able to login with an Admin profile I saved from the last episode of this not working.

There is something SERIOUSLY wrong with these updates!!

I am now in the process of RESTORING my MacBook Pro 2013 from backup.  Last time I worked with Apple Care and we simply formatted the HD.  Installed OS X 10.11.0 and then updated the OS to 10.11.3.  Once that was done we used Migration Assistant to restore my user profile.  Totally insane!
