Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It appears that you're not able to use AirPlay Mirroring from your MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) to your Apple TV. From Use AirPlay to display video from your Mac on an HDTV, it looks like AirPlay Mirroring requires an Early 2011 or later MacBook Pro:
Requirements for using AirPlay
If you go to Apple menu > System Preferences, click Displays, and don't see the option to "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available," your Mac doesn't meet these requirements.
Minimum requirements if your Mac and Apple TV are on the same network:
- Apple TV (2nd generation or later) with the latest Apple TV software
- For mirroring your display or extending your desktop, any of the following Mac computers with OS X Mountain Lion v10.8 or later:
Minimum requirements for peer-to-peer AirPlay, which lets visitors quickly and easily connect their Mac or iOS device to your Apple TV without gaining passwords and connecting to the Wi-Fi network:
- Apple TV (3rd generation rev A, model A1469 or later) with the latest Apple TV software
- A Mac (2012 or later) with OS X Yosemite v10.10 or later
For help with using AirPlay from Quicktime or Safari to your Apple TV, see the instructions and "Get Help" section in Use AirPlay to display video from your Mac on an HDTV.
To mirror your Mac on your HDTV, I'd suggest using the Mini DisplayPort connection to use the TV as an external display. The information at these links can help with getting started:

Sincerely.

Servers EnterpriseThere are some third-party tools to provide AirPlay capability on older Macs, the performance overhead will be higher because it will be being processed purely in software with no hardware acceleration. Allegedly the lack of hardware support is the reason older models do not have this feature.

Jan 25, 2016 7:33 AM in response to John Lockwoodby csaszardesign,I did try AirParrot. It worked in terms of projecting my computer onto my TV, but when I played a movie, the tv screen movie would freeze periodically and therefore played a delayed version of what was on my computer so the audio was not aligned. Thank you again, I think I just need to upgrade all my electronic devices, everything is old
