Q: Airport Express dropping stream

Two weeks ago i installed Apple TV, latest edition.  Ever since my airport express drops the stream regularly.  The unit is working, the green light is on, it plays music from my itunes on desktop, iphone, ipad, but the music regularly stops playing and then picks up again.  Super annoying, almost rendering the AE useless.  any suggestion?  Apple TV is off while this occurs.

    Since you get this issue even though the new Apple TV is not on leads me to believe it has nothing to do with what you are experiencing.

     

    To get a better understanding of your current network situation, please provide the make & model of all of your networking hardware (modems, routers, etc.) ... and how they are interconnected ... that is, are they connected by wire or wireless or both?

    Everything goes thru a Cisco wireless gateway Model DPC3825 provided by my cable provider.  No other interconnection, as issue arises if streaming internet radio thru iphone (wifi) or itunes on desktop thru wifi.

    Thanks for the additional info. How is the Express connected to the Cisco gateway? ... by wire or wireless? Regardless, where is the Express located in relation to the gateway? ... same room, different room, or different floor?

     

    When the streaming issue happens where is the iTunes host in relation to either device? Does it happen more with your iOS or OS X/Windows device?

    Express is connected wirelessly to gateway.

    The express and gateway are 8ft from each other, unimpeded.  If they had eyes they could see each other.

    The iTunes host is in another room, 20 ft away max.  When issue happens with iphone or ipad they r usually in the same room as gateway and express.

    Seems to happen equally with Windows running iTunes or iphone and iPad steaming Internet.

    I am assuming that the Express is configured to "join the wireless network" provided by the gateway as a wireless client for the purposes of streaming ... correct?

     

    In this configuration, the iTunes host will first stream to the gateway. In turn, the stream will travel from the gateway the Express. When streaming from your iOS devices in the same room, the stream path is the same except it would not have to traverse through the wall as in the first case. I would expect the former to be more problematic in the building material used in the wall is such that it would degrade the Wi-Fi signal "seen" by iTunes host.

     

    However, I could still see the issue for any host if there is some other form of Wi-Fi interference present to affect the overall signal quality of your wireless system.
