Q: My computer and iTunes don't recognize my iPod classic.

My iPod and iTunes have been working fine, without any issues, for quite awhile. Then, last night I downloaded some new songs and went to add them to my iPod classic, but neither iTunes nor my computer recognized it. I tried restarting my iPod and restarting my computer, but that didn't fix the problem. And I ran Diagnostic Mode on my iPod which showed no problems with the iPod itself. It's not the USB cable either.

As of this morning, my computer has started automatically ejecting my iPod as soon as I connect it which it wasn't doing last night. So the problem seems to be getting worse. However, my computer and iTunes recognize my iPod nano. So the problem is only with my iPod classic.

I borrowed a friend's computer, another PC, and her computer recognized my iPod classic just fine and didn't automatically eject it. On her computer, my iPod showed up fine in iTunes too.I was able to restore my iPod classic on her computer, hoping that would fix the problem, but it didn't. My own computer still won't recognize my iPod classic. There have been no changes or updates to my computer or to iTunes that could account for this, especially since it still recognizes my iPod nano.

In summary: my computer, iTunes, and my iPod classic are all working fine except for when I try to connect my iPod classic to my computer. My computer and iTunes recognize my other iPod and my iPod classic is recognized by other PCs. This has been extremely frustrating and I don't know what else to try. I'm just at a total loss as to what exactly the problem is, let alone what the solution is or could be. I'm pretty much at my wits' end here and I'd be very grateful for any help. So if anyone has an idea or solution, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you so much.

As a test, shut down your computer and disconnect all USB devices.  You can leave standard UBS keyboard/mouse connected, if used.  Do this to put the iPod into Disk Mode

Putting iPod into Disk Mode - Apple Support

Start up computer, run iTunes, and connect iPod to a direct USB port on computer, by itself.  If iTunes picks up iPod, it may prompt you to do a Restore.  If you get to that point, the iPod may now connect to computer (and iTunes) normally.  Eject iPod but leave it connected; do a Reset (restart) of iPod, so that it starts up normally.  See if iTunes picks it up again.

If iTunes does not pick it up in Disk Mode either, you'll have to try something else.  Please post back with the outcome so far.  You did some good trouble-shooting, and showed the "parts" seem to work fine separately.  They just don't work together for some reason.
