Q: i have updated my macbookpro (2010) from snow leopard to elcapitan but when i restart it will not complete the installation so no longer able to use it. help?

i have updated my macbookpro (2010) from snow leopard to elcapitan but when i restart it will not complete the installation so no longer able to use it.

I have tried the following:

1. starting using Command R and using Disk Utility which did say it had problems but then displayed all okay after finishing.

2. tried Verbose mode and did not work

3. tried Command S mode did not work.

4. tried zapping the pram did not work.

5. couple of other things that I had read but to no avail.

It starts up and the line begins to show the computer is doing its 'thing' but gets stuck about 3/4 quarters of the way and goes no further. Would appreciate any suggestions.

PS: also did try starting up from the original disks as well but no luck.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

You said "PS: also did try starting up from the original disks as well but no luck."

Exact what happened when you tried?

Did you try formatting the HD?

Did you start the install of SL?

ummm! trying to remember. I think I ran Disk Utility and don't recall being able tobut do i want to format the HD - won't it erase my info. Also not sure what you meant by 'did you start the install of SL? Have actually run Disk Utility again a couple of times and it does say - cannot fix HD!!! Think I'm in a real mess here. Would it work if I tried starting up with installing 'Lion"? Just asking as I have a copy.

    cheers

sorry also it is currently 'installing on "Macintosh HD" and says it will be 24 minutes remaining. I did this and left overnight and again yesterday two or three times but it would not go any further.

This "and it does say - cannot fix HD!!! Think I'm in a real mess here."

would indicate that the HD is failing.

I would connect a USB HD to the computer and install SL to that disk. Then boot from that disk and see if you can recovery data for the internal disk.

Then replace the internal disk. I would replace the disk with an SSD.

Then boot from external disk and download the El Capitan installer nd run it and select the the internal disk as where to install EC. The copy the data to the new EC disk
