You've got to trick GB into believing the lessons aren't there because if you delete the attempting downloads you also delete the lessons you downloaded via Kenny's instructions:

    1. Quit GB
    2. Move the lesson file(s) GB is trying to download that you already have in /Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Learn to Play to your desktop so GB can't find them
    3. Open GB, say OK to continuing the downloading and delete all the lessons that are trying to download.
    4. Quit GB
    5. Move the lesson(s) on your desktop back to /Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Learn to Play
    6. Reopen GB.  The downloading won't start up automatically again and your lessons will show.

Kinda convoluted but what we're doing here isn't in the manual.  The program wants to work in its own way so you have to work around it.  Thanks again to Kenny for thinking outside the box.

There is no way to delete the lessons that are trying to download. When they are highlighted, the delete key causes the screen to pulse white like the action is not allowed. Is there another way to delete the lessons from the download queue?

Fantastic advice, kenny+k!!   You've also solved ANOTHER problem of Learn to Play lessons not running on my son's old Power Mac G5 2.7.  By downloading and installing the lessons manually, you can force them to play on the power pc system, despite the warning that the lessons are Intel only.

    Much thanks!!

Woh Dude.  That's weird.  What GB version and OS do you have?  I've got GB "11 6.0.5 running on OS 10.8.5 (mt. Lion).  Mine does not behave that way.  It says this:

    Screen Shot 2015-03-02 at 12.05.13 PM.png

When I select the delete button on the pop up the lesson download stops and does'nt start up again in subsequent sessions.  Initially I interpreted this pop up message to mean the delete button also deleted the lesson file I already had on my HD.  So I moved all my lesson files just in case.  Now when I checked it again this morning the lesson on the hard drive remains.  Confusing message from GB. I'd make copies of the lessons on an external HD to be safe anyway before you delete the downloading.

Anyway check your version.  I hear the new GB is buggy.  You may need to update to the latest version that may have fixed that bug.  Or you can go back to an earlier version.  Nothing wrong with 6.0.5.  It came with iLife which you might still be able to download off the internet somewhere.  The good thing is the lessons work with any version.  Good Luck.

Yup, that's the same behavior and message I get. Delete the lesson while downloading, GarageBand doesn't ask for it again.

By the way, I get the same behavior on:

    10.7.5, GB '09 (5.1)

    10.9.5, GB '11 (6.0.5)

I didn't have to do any moving of any files.

    1. Start GB.
    2. If GB is trying to "download" any lessons, select each lesson, press Delete, confirm the delete.
    3. Quit GB.
    4. Install the manually downloaded lessons (run each downloaded .pkg installer file).
    5. Start GB.

You mileage may vary. This works using an admin-level account on 10.7, GB '09 and 10.9, GB '11.

I'm using GarageBand 10.0.3 on Yosemite 10.10.2, i guess deleting lessons is broken in the newest version.

If I had to guess, not "broken" as much as "deprecated" (we don't want you deleting lessons). Not surprised.

Sorry about that. Hope you're able to find a workaround, or at least tolerate the nagging.

I suppose if you could restore the original GB install (TimeMachine?), then install the lesson packages, that might do it, but I cannot test that myself.

I think I'll just stay with GB 6.0.5.  Don't like having to upgrade my OS to Yosemite.  I hear they're both buggy.  You could update to the latest GB or wait for it to be released.  Maybe Apple will have fixed that.  Send them a bug report if you haven't already.

***Apple doesn't watch these boards, but the real problem appears to be that the Apple Software Update certificate authority ("CA" - used to digitally sign the software for security) expired mid-February. So, when GB tries to install the downloaded file, the certificate error fails the install. When you're running the installer manually, you have to open the certificate window and "trust" the certificate!!! If Apple would simply update the .pkg files with a new signed cert, I think this would all go away.

    You are a genius!

I'm having the same problem and have been tinkering for hours.

after reading this, i just changed the system date to 1st of feb and voila its working.  Everything is downloading as normal in Garageband.

    Thanks for sharing kenny+k

Wow that's even easier to do!  But forgot to mention that after your downloads are done you need to go back and reset you system date to the current.  Don't know what problems you'll have if you don't though.  Kenny must have had some inside information to know when the certificate expired.  I haven't tried to download lessons through GB since I used Kenny's technique.  Next time if Apple hasn't fixed the problem I'll definitely try yours.  Its much simpler.  Thanks!

I went back and checked to see if the downloading problem is fixed.  Nope, not yet.  I still like Macs better than PCs but don't know much about Windows 10, I'm still using XP in a virtual box on my macbook for a few legacy programs I still need (before I switched to Mac).

On another GB subject.  Have you tried recording your instrument with the lesson?  I can't get the record button to work.  I've checked all of the settings and have my input set to internal mic for my acoustic guitar but it won't light up and record during the lesson.  I can get it to record in a project so I know GB can record it but why it won't in the lesson is a mystery.

Yes I checked the settings and I'm set to use the internal mac for my acoustic guitar. As I looked into it further the lesson play along recording works for me on some guitar lessons and not on others.  It seems to not work on Basic lessons 2-9 but works on Basic lesson 1 and all of the Rock Guitar and Blues Guitar lessons.  Very weird.  So I thought Basic lesson 1 came with my macbook when I bought it 2 years ago and I just downloaded the Rock and Blues lessons. But Basic lessons 2-9 I downloaded after I bought my macbook but back in 2013.  Maybe the lessons 2-9 need to be updated.  Unfortunately when I did download an updated lesson 9 it still does not let me record a play along.  Too weird.  Oh well. I'm going to start another post on this one.

Thanks for this. A very annoying bug, or simply careless ****-up depending on how you look at it.

One useful point - it appears that if you download the second lesson in the way suggested, subsequent ones seem to work OK from within GB?

    Where's the first lesson gone...??
