Q: iMac 21" 4k Late 2015: Sleep/wake issue and Safari beach balls...

Hi all,

I have a few issues with a custom build version (maxed out processor, SSD drive and RAM) of the above desktop running El Capitain 10.11.3. Two of these are the following:

1. I put the computer to sleep by clicking on the Apple icon in the top-left corner and clicking "Sleep". I leave it overnight and when I come back to the iMac a message comes up stating that the computer and to be restarted due to a sleep wake problem. I have never seen this before on other Macs I've had. I have no software installed it yet and the only devices connected are three Thunderbolt WD My Studio drives (6TB per enclosure) that are daisy chained using Thunderbolt.

2. When I launch Safari I get a lot of beachballs. Eg. YouTube, Google searches and the Macrumors forums!

Anyone has a clue what could be going on here?

Many thanks!

The 3 drives could be causing the computer to have sleep issues. The only way to test would be to unplug the drives and then let the computer sleep overnight and see if the issue reoccurs.

Same with the websites loading slow or not at all. Test everything you can in a 3rd-party-less environment.

If you are still having issues and suspect a hardware failure, return the device to Apple for a replacement. All Apple computers have a 1 year hardware warranty.

You can also run Apple Diagnostic to check for potential errors.

Thanks Pmintz25.  I ran the diagnostics and it could not find any issues.  I unplugged the drives and ran the test.

I have nothing installed on the iMac yet (3rd party or otherwise) so it's fresh out of the box sort of speak apart from the El Capitain combo updates I have applied.

    This just came to mind...

Open System Preferences > Energy Saver > Uncheck "Put hard disks to sleep when possible."

This shuts your hard drive down to conserve energy but also requires it to "start up" every time the computer wakes up. If your external drives are trying to access the hard drive, they will cause a problem when the hard drive goes to sleep because they will no longer be able to communicate with the hard drive.

The only way we can really test this is to leave the computer asleep for a while without anything connected and see if the issue persists. If the issue does not come back when all devices are removed, and only occurs when the hard drives are connected, then you may want to contact the manufacturer of the external drives to see if there are any known resolutions.

    Best of luck

Thanks again for your reply and follow-up!  Much appreciated.

I will leave the drives not connected overnight to see if the problem persists.

    Thanks again!

It will be good to know if the issue persists without third party interference. Let me know how it goes so we can pick up where we left off if need be.

Perhaps someone else will chime in overnight and have some words of wisdom for us.

That sounds like a plan.  Thank you very much again for taking your time.

As a side note, when I run the diagnostics test it is on a black background with white text instead of the grey background with black text I have seen on the screenshots from Apple's website.  Not sure if this would signify an issue somewhere but thought I'd mention it.
