Q: my logic pro x cont use more than 1.4 gb in my iMac when i have 16 gb

Hi, everyone. Im a little desperate by now. I have an iMac late 2009 with 3.06 processor and 16 gb of ram. Im running in EL Capitan. My logic Pro x wont use more than 2gb and will give me overload message if i have more than 4 software instruments. Can someone tell me why is this happening? what can i do to let Logic use all the ram power i have? Thanks a lot

iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

How do you know LPX can't use more than 2GB? What info are you basing that on?

Have you confirmed your extra RAM is still accessible and working via Apple menu > About This Mac...?

Overload msgs are normally related to available CPU resources or disk speed.... as much as a lack of memory...

Hi The Art Of Sound, thank you for your reply.

    1. Im basing my information on the Activity Monitor inside the Utilities folder located in Applications in my mac. The activity monitor shows all the physical memory =16gb and used memory = 4gb average. When I use logic, the AM also shows me the amount that LPX is using and lately it wont go higher than 1.7gb.

    2. Im guessing my 16 gb of ram are accessible and working since via apple menú - about this mac says "all memory slots are currently in use". I dont know if you mean something else.

    3. I understand that, still... how do i get my LPX to use more ram that it is currently using so it wont crash so often?

You may be misunderstanding how memory management works.. If a project in Logic isn't using any more than 1.6GB then it won't just use more memory.... simply because it's available. It depends on the project and what memory is needed to load and run the project. Software instruments like synths or FX plugins, in themselves tend not to use or need a lot of memory... CPU resources, yes, memory, no....

Im guessing my 16 gb of ram are accessible and working since via apple menú - about this mac says "all memory slots are currently in use". I dont know if you mean something else.

Your Mac's RAM would then appear to be working and accessible to OS X and therefore Logic Pro X

I understand that, still... how do i get my LPX to use more ram that it is currently using so it wont crash so often?

A lack of RAM is not the only cause of such problems you described in your first post... You could simply be pushing the limits of your Mac's other resources such as CPU or Hard Drive Performance, causing the problems..  Please read the linked support file on LPX - System Overloads.. I provided earlier and make sure you adopt some if not all of the suggestions there.

However, to confirm if you have anything installed or misconfigured,  that could be causing your issues, would you download Etrecheck...

    http://www.etrecheck.com

...and post up the report here so we can take a look /see.... and maybe discover what's really causing your issues... if anything.

Thank you again for your helpful reply.

I ran the Etrecheck and this happened

    Top Processes by CPU:

            80%    kernel_task

            28%    Logic Pro X

            15%    com.apple.WebKit.WebContent(4)

            14%    WindowServer

             7%    VTDecoderXPCService

    Top Processes by Memory:

        1.17 GB    Logic Pro X

        1.12 GB    com.apple.WebKit.WebContent(4)

        1.07 GB    kernel_task

        180 MB    mds_stores

        164 MB    MIDIServer

Im guessing kernel_task is the one causing trouble? im I right saying this? how could i fix this if this is the problem?

Again, thank you for your time and patiente

Possibly but I would need to see the whole of the report, not just a small bit, to understand fully what is going on....

If you are concerned about posting it all here in public (though there is nothing in the report that identifies you) you could upload it somewhere and provide me with a link, such as dropbox...

Id also recommend shutting down (not restarting) your Mac... via the Apple Menu option Shut Down... and then starting it again via it's Power button..... Run etrecheck once more and see how things look then...

Finally, its worth pointing out that your Mac has what today, is considered a very low end 2 Core processor and possibly the really slow on board graphics chip or maybe the slightly better ATI Radeon HD 4670 so because of the performance demands made by recent OS X versions, you are probably seeing a noticable degree of performance degradation every time you upgrade OS X.

Personally I would run nothing more than Snow Leopard and LP9 on such a Mac.. but I understand the need to use LPX and more modern OS X versions.. There is just a large penalty, in some cases, for wanting to use the 'latest and greatest' OS X and audio software.

    It is different.

I do feel guilty for updating my mac everytime i get a box asking me to do it. I just did not realize how bad it would get. Going back to snow leopard is not so bad for me. Going back to LP definitively is. Many of my client´s tracks have drummer as the main beat. Well.. one step at the time... is there anything else you would tell me after reading the whole report?

And again thank you so very much

The first thing of note is that most of your recent crashes were caused apparently by a failure of a 3rd party plugin.. via the AU Validation Tool..... That same issue could easily be affecting the stability of Logic itself depending on how you attempted to resolve the original issue...

The next thing is you are using Digidesign hardware and drivers... In my personal expeirence, I have come across way too many cases of users with such issues simply becauise they are using Digidesign drivers that tend to be unstable when used outside of ProTools.. Sorry, not what you would want to hear but i will never allow any Digidesign drivers anywhere near any of my systems due to the multitude of issues I have had to help or deal with in the past.

Also, you have a lot of redundant software and drivers etc, installed that you should attempt to remove and clean up...(Eleven and MBox 2 stuff mainly though you have some kind of cloud backup system  called ZipCloud... thats not working correctly either..  and a few others that you could probably do without these days.)

Next I have no idea why your kernal task is running at such a high level but that probably indicates something else you have running in the background of your mac thats causing this high level of CPU drain... or an issue with El Cap itself... or.. more liely you could have an issue with overheating or a faulting bit of hardware/fan thats causing the problem..

Read through this thread for more info and further ideas..
