Q: Unable to install Safari 9.0.3 update

Hello all,

I have a MacBook Air (11-inch, Mid 2013) with Yosemite 10.10.5. Current version of Safari installed is 9.0.1.

When I open the AppStore, it shows an update for Safari 9.0.3. When I click Update, it downloads the update, then installs the update, then says "Installed" in a grayed out box for a second or two before reverting back to the option to Update. When I originally tried to update along with other updates (Firmware, iTunes, etc...) the computer said it could not install Safari because the download could have been corrupted. But since installing each update separately, I have not received this error and Safari is the only thing that won't update.

When I open Safari or "Get Info" on the app, it still shows 9.0.1. Here is what I've tried so far:

- Logged out and back into Apple ID used in the AppStore (Apple ID isn't required for Apple apps anyway)

- Cleared all caches from /Library/Caches and ~/Library/Caches, restarted, emptied trash, tried again

- Tried installing while in Safe Boot

- Repaired Permissions (fixed several things but one Safari.app related issue keeps reoccuring even after being "repaired")

- Verified Disk for good measure...no errors

- Cleared AppStore update folder in /Library/Updates

- Deleted all AppStore related caches using Terminal via "open $TMPDIR../C" and "open $TMPDIR../T"

Apple's software download page does not have this update to download manually. The only step I can think of that I haven't tried is simply reinstalling Yosemite. I would rather not do this since I work at a school and the network isn't always the greatest. Also, Safari works totally fine on 9.0.1.

Any ideas?

Also chiming in to report the same issue on multiple machines.

I've also deleted the App Store cache (/var/folders/zz/zyxvpxvq6csfxvn_n00000s0000068/), and restarted without resolution.

If Apple would at least provide a standalone link to Safari 9.0.3 that's be great. Or pull the update from the App Store.

Let me rephrase, i'm having the same problem. I work as IT at a school district and we are unable to update to El Capitan due to software reasons, so I don't want to attempt that option of the upgrade. I believe that this update is corrupted on Apples end, as i've tried on multiple machines and get the same errors back as the original poster is having, even with a fresh install of OS X Yosemite.

Instead of hijacking this thread, you really should start your own thread for your problem.

I finished installing El Capitan and all of it's updates and my computer DID in fact install Safari 9.0.3 successfully. However, I was never able to install 9.0.3 from the App Store. It only installed because it came with El Capitan.

So for those of you who do not want to upgrade to El Capitan, I would try reinstalling Yosemite. Since Apple no longer includes install media with their devices, the only way to reinstall the preinstalled apps is to reinstall the entire OS. iTunes is one of the only exceptions.

I have those same restrictions with a lot of testing/lockdown browser software. The only reason I am ok with upgrading this machine is because it will be used for long-term substitutes, not for testing. But since Safari 9.0.1 still works, you may just have to leave the computers how they are. If you are like me, you hate having an update icon on the dock, but it's just something us school IT guys are going to have to live with until a newer update is released.

If your post is true, then it looks like a reinstall doesn't even fix the issue. That's a real bummer.

Yes, I'm like you in that respect. We've been trying to encourage the teachers to keep their Macs updated, so when they started seeing this error, I got loads of questions. I'm seeing now it's most likely Apples end since even mine doesn't appear to want to install correctly. The question of the error is still bugging me, but I guess I will have to wait.

Will Apple release a fix?  If so, I would like to wait for that if possible.

Reinstalling the OS for a failed web browser update seems drastic with a  potential for data loss (Xcode, etc.).

Also, can Safari be deleted (I've tried dragging it to the trash to no avail)?

    Thanks

I've tried all the recommendations suggested in this thread except for upgrading to El Capitan. My organization has not approved the upgrade yet, so we have the latest version of Yosemite. Based on what I've read in this thread and experienced with my 9 attempts on 9 different Macs running Yosemite, it appears that Safari 9.0.3 is not compatible with Yosemite. Has anyone been able to successfully install Safari 9.0.3 on Yosemite? I don't think upgrading to El Capitan a reasonable solution.

    Last update:

Grabbed another computer and reinstalled Yosemite from 10.10, and then updated back up to 10.10.5.

Attempted to update Safari and again had the same issue. While on the gray screen, the computer says "Unable to install Safari. The download may have been corrupted."

I honestly think this is an error in Apple's update. All other Apps and updates work fine. Sadly, a reinstall doesn't fix the issue. The only "resolution" for me was to update to El Capitan.

What is the problem with upgrading to El Capitan? So far for me it has been working fine.

A few of us, myself included, are not allowed to update to El Capitan because we work at a school and the software is not approved for certain school testing. We load MacBook Airs with lockdown browsers and testing software that may not work with El Capitan. So it's fine for our teacher devices but the Macs we use for students are not allowed to update just yet.

Because not all of us are talking about our personal machine. Some of us rely on software or drivers that haven't been updated to El Capitan due to SIP (yes the developers in questions are blockheads). We're almost ready, but updating 500+ machines to El Capitan because we can't run a simple Safari update is asinine.

I have a number of applications not rated for El Capitan as of yet, thus to successfully update Safari, I will lose access to my development environments for a  number of platforms.  I'm not sure how a browser update could cause such a problem, but it does not appear that it was well thought out and/or tested.

For the time being, I've removed the app store from my dock to avoid that little red 1 until the problem is solved.
