Q: Using time machine back up onto a new profile

Hello, I'm trying to put my time machine back up from my macbook onto a new profile on a desktop. Migration assistant said it completed the transfer, but nothing is here.

I've researched and saw that some people say a new profile was probably created, but there are no other profiles under the users other than the one I just created and the one my husband has had for months.

I don't really know what to do because I am beyond frustrated. I'm only trying to migrate to the desktop because my 2010 laptop isn't syncing properly with the photos app to my phone and now i can't get the desktop to work.

I'm tech savvy to the point that I know how to use everything I need on a computer, but I'm very limited when it comes to troubleshooting and problem solving so please keep things in lay terms. Much appreciated.

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2010), iOS 9.2.1

    Hello murrayhowie715,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

If I understand your post correctly you are trying to restore your entire computer from a previous Time Machine backup.  In order for you to do this, you will need to boot to OS X Recovery and select the Restore from Time Machine backup option.

    Restore everything:

    • To restore everything in your Time Machine backup, use OS X Recovery.
    • To copy the files, settings, and OS X user accounts in your backup to another Mac, use Migration Assistant.

Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac

If this is not what you're trying to do, then please let us know more about what you're trying to accomplish.

    Take care.
