Q: Notes app: attachments is not valid

I'm experiencing a problem which started recently with the Notes app (4.2- 549.10.1) on OSX El Capitan (10.11.2). When exiting Notes, I get the following error:

Yes, the grammar really is that bad. After choosing OK (not really a choice- it is the only option), this message appears

Cancel takes me back to Notes, Quit anyway quits. Oddly, no notes or attachments appear to be missing when I re-load Notes, but I get the same messages after every exit. I've tried deleting some of my recently added notes, also with no apparent change. I have a couple hundred notes in total, and only recently started experiencing these problems.

Any suggestions or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

I ran into the exact same issue on my iMac just this morning. I added one item and deleted another from an existing note and received the "Multiple validation errors occurred" warning followed by the "Could not save changes while quitting. Quit anyway?" message. I clicked on "Quit anyway" then reopened Notes. The item I added was not there but the Item I deleted was gone. Quitting Notes again generated the same two messages (even though I had made no changes).

I use iCloud to sync all of my notes.

My iMac is running El Capitan v10.11.2 (15C50)

I've no idea what caused it, but here's what I did and so far it seems to have resolved things:

Open System Preferences
Click on iCloud
Uncheck Notes and close System Preferences
Log into iCloud and check Notes - all notes I had made were still there
Log out of iCloud
Open Notes on iMac - all notes were gone
Open System Preferences
Click on iCloud
Check Notes and close System Preferences
Open Notes - iCloud repopulated all of my notes

Closing and opening Notes, adding and deleting items and creating new notes works as expected now.

BTW, I don't know if logging into iCloud and checking Notes there was important or not, but it's what I did.

I don't know if something was corrupted, etc. but as mentioned Notes seems to be working normally now including syncing to my iPhone and iPad. I'll update if anything changes.

Back up your Mac if you have not done so already. To learn how to do that read https://www.apple.com/support/backup/. To learn how to use Time Machine read Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac.

First make sure all your iCloud Notes are present and intact by logging in to iCloud, and selecting Notes. Consider archiving them as described here: Archive or make copies of your iCloud data - Apple Support

Then: After establishing a reasonably fast Internet connection, turn off Notes in System Preferences > iCloud, and turn it on again. Launch the Notes app and let it populate. Determine if that results in a permanent resolution.

All this assumes you are using iCloud services for your Notes and not some non-Apple service such as Microsoft Exchange. Non-Apple services can be used with the Notes app but I can't help with them.

I tried your suggestion, John, but unfortunately that didn't resolve my problem.

Interestingly, the first time I exited Notes after replicating, I got a slightly different error: "Multiple Validation errors". Exiting Notes subsequently returned to the messages I was seeing previously. All of my notes appear intact when I view them via the iCloud web app, and I don't see any errors there.

And yes, I'm using iCloud services only. In any case, thank you for giving me something to try! If you have any other ideas I'd be happy to see them.

Please launch the Console application in any one of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take an action that isn't working the way you expect. Select any lines that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name or email address, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Did you get this resolved? I have the same problem.

The console has things like:
- LaunchServices: Could not store lsd-identifiers file at /private/var/db/lsd/com.apple.lsdschemes.plist
- SDConnectionManager:: XPC connection invalidated
- Error saving note context: Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=1550 "attachments is not valid." UserInfo={Dangling reference to an invalid object.=null, NSValidationErrorValue=Relationship 'attachments' on managed object..... (this line goes on forever).

I found that even Notes on iCloud via a browser will fail with an exception while looking at my notes. Not on exit, but usually at some point while I'm scrolling through my notes.

I've tried going through and deleting notes with attachments, hoping I might accidentally / luckily find the one (or several) that are causing the 'invalid attachments' problem, but no such luck. I've also clicked on 'report to Apple' every time the error occurs. For now, I've basically given up on using Notes, which is disappointing as I use it a lot for keeping track of travel plans and the like.

Rich, I'm 99% certain that I did exactly what you described 'way back on December 24 after John Galt suggested it. But this time it worked!

If I did anything different at all, it was to be extremely careful about the sequence. I exactly followed the steps you listed, including logging in to iCloud after unclicking Notes in System Preferences=> iCloud. And after doing exactly what you described, I was able to enter and exit Notes several times without errors.

I suppose that sometime since I last tried on December 24, Apple could have fixed something on the iCloud side. One point I made above was that even accessing Notes via the iCloud website was 'crashing' for me. That doesn't seem to be happening any more either.

Or it could just be that the exact sequence you followed is necessary. Either way, I'm happy!

Thank you!! Lately I've been hit by all the weird random Apple bugs (Apple Mail on my Mac stopped coming in after El Capitan update, iOS 9 links in email, safari/Google, and some apps suddenly stopped working, etc). This is the first solution I've found for any of the random issues that have been popping up since September. It feels great to have a resolution for something!!

I ran into the exact same issue on my iMac just this morning. I added one item and deleted another from an existing note and received the "Multiple validation errors occurred" warning followed by the "Could not save changes while quitting. Quit anyway?" message. I clicked on "Quit anyway" then reopened Notes. The item I added was not there but the Item I deleted was gone. Quitting Notes again generated the same two messages (even though I had made no changes).

I use iCloud to sync all of my notes.

My iMac is running El Capitan v10.11.2 (15C50)

I've no idea what caused it, but here's what I did and so far it seems to have resolved things:

Open System Preferences
Click on iCloud
Uncheck Notes and close System Preferences
Log into iCloud and check Notes - all notes I had made were still there
Log out of iCloud
Open Notes on iMac - all notes were gone
Open System Preferences
Click on iCloud
Check Notes and close System Preferences
Open Notes - iCloud repopulated all of my notes

Closing and opening Notes, adding and deleting items and creating new notes works as expected now.

BTW, I don't know if logging into iCloud and checking Notes there was important or not, but it's what I did.

I don't know if something was corrupted, etc. but as mentioned Notes seems to be working normally now including syncing to my iPhone and iPad. I'll update if anything changes.
