Q: Airport Features

Guy Kawasaki posted his Tech Tuesday tip on his Facebook page on the procedure to configure multiple Apple Airport basestations to generate a wider Wi-Fi coverage field.

 

I’m an Apple fan, but am disenchanted by the Airport’s limitations and isolation from the Apple ecosystem.

 

  1. Why doesn't the AirPort Utility have a “Mesh” mode for linking & syncing multiple Wi-Fi base stations under the same SSID/password/encryption/broadcast channel?
  2. Why doesn’t the AirPort Utility work with all the models of Airport routers?
  3. Why doesn’t the AirPort/TimeCapsule have an optional web interface? (for users that would prefer to just use a web browser)
  4. Why don’t the AirPort routers provide AirPrint server capability (like the Lantronix Xprint Server)
  5. Why doesn’t an AirPort/Time Capsule offer basic file/music/movie serving to iOS and Apple TV devices?

    You posted your questions on a user-to-user support forum. We are all users here, just like you.

     

    No one here will know "why" Apple has had made the decisions that they have.....only Apple knows the "why" about anything that they do.

     

    If you want answers to your "why" questions, you will need to speak with Apple.

    I know Apple products well, but I'll be the first to say know I don't know everything. I was hoping that a reply to my post might include some productive user tips in response to my questions. Maybe these functionalities that appear to be plainly missing are buried in there and I missed it (or a great workaround is available)?

     

    --Don't know it all, but always want to learn more.

    Nothing wrong with wanting to learn, but If you will review your questions again, you will see that none of them ever asked whether a certain feature or setting might exist on a product. Instead, you took the attitude in your post of asking "why" things that you wanted to see did not exist.

     

    You might consider taking a different approach next time. Something like......"Maybe I missed it, but does the WYZ product have e setting that might allow things to...........?

     

    At least, that way you will have a chance for a few more responses. I doubt that you will get any more responses to your original post......but I may be wrong about that. We'll see.

    Bob, I can see from your ranking on this forum, and your willingness to help, that you are well-versed on this topic. Maybe I am completely missing the way wireless networks should be working... what type of wired and wifi networking setup do you use?
