Q: Having trouble connecting iPhone 6s to iMac with Lion OS

Hi all.

I have an iPhone 6s and an iMac from mid-2011 that is still running on Lion OS. When I connect my iPhone, I get the message that "the iPhone cannot be used because it requires a newer version of iTunes." So I checked that, and I'm running the latest version. When I open iTunes, I don't see my device, and all the menu options for syncing are gray.

We have been reluctant to upgrade to El Capitan because of negative feedback regarding iPhoto (specifically, how the upgrade deletes all the events that we have so painstakingly named since we bought the iMac). We have just purchased more RAM for our machine (which can hold 16; we currently have 4 and will be adding 8 more) due to the frequent appearance of the spinning color wheel.

Any ideas on the cause of the iTunes/iPhone/iMac problem and/or how to fix it?

Thanks!

You are running the latest version of iTunes that your Mac can run on your current OS X, however, it is not the most current version of iTunes. 12.2.x is required to sync with any device running iOS 9. It is the iOS that requires the most current version of iTunes, not the device type.

Sorry, but you would need to upgrade your OS X in order to be able to download the most current version of iTunes, which is 12.3.2.35

    Sorry

iOS9 on a mobile device requires iTunes 12.3 or higher which in turn requires a computer running OSX 10.8.5 or higher.  System Update only checks for updates to the current system version you are running but that itself may be out of date.  It may or may not be possible to upgrade your computer to the required system:

You can either buy a download code for OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion from Apple online, or you can try installing the free El Capitan OSX 10.11.  El Capitan may run slower on older machines and require additional RAM purchase.  Doing a big jump in system versions is also more likely to affect old software.

If you have any PPC generation software that has been running under OSX 10.6 it will not be supported under any later system versions.

    Hi Gail.

Thank you! My iTunes version is 12.2.2.25, but I guess maybe it's the difference between 12.2 and 12.3 that is causing the problems. I just changed from an iPhone 5s to a 6s, which is the first time I had this problem. I appreciate the help…and kindness!

If you buy an IOS device from Apple it will always come with the newest iOS installed which will have very specific iTunes requirements. If you own any equipment older than 5 years and/or you do not want to upgrade software you must read all fine print carefully before buying any other equipment. Others have been caught out and had to buy new computer to sync!

    Hi!

Thank you for your thorough explanation and help! I'm not that spooked to upgrade to Mountain Lion, and I appreciate the link. I am, however, really, really scared that all my iPhoto events could go *poof* if I try for El Capitan. Some even complained about this problem with Yosemite.

Again, thank you for your help and for explaining things so well.

My general take on this is people who are afraid of anything with computers do not maintain proper backups.

Well, as Limnos stated, a backup to Time Machine is imperative.

However, the iPhoto Library and the Photos library (Photos is the photo app for El Capitan) are two separate libraries. Your iPhoto library photos are imported to create the Photos Library, but the process itself does not in any way affect your iPhoto Library. If you make sure that you are up to date on the iPhoto application before you upgrade, then you will be able to continue to use iPhoto. You can also use Photos as well. I use both for various actions. Once the initial import to create the Photos library is done (it's automatic with your OK), the two libraries are separate, so what you do in one won't be reflected in the other. I have also refrained from using iCloud Photo Library, and you don't have to use that in order to use Photos.

You want to make sure that you are running iPhoto 9.6.1, otherwise you will have to follow the instructions in this support article by one of our fellow Support Community members: Get iPhoto 9.6.1 if you didn't update before OS... | Apple Support Communities

Here are a couple of articles about Photos and about iCloud Photo Library so you will know what they are about:

Okay. Ouch. That hurt, but I can take it.

I'll get on this over the weekend and let you know how it goes! Thank you again!

    Limnos and Gail,

Thank you SO much for all your advice. Photos had trouble importing all the iPhoto pictures on the first couple of tries, but all is right with the world now. Thank you again!
