Q: Not all Titles imported over from iPhoto to Photos

Help! I started using iCloud photo storage and moved all 56K pics up to the cloud from iPhoto and now am using Photos. Here is my issue:

Today, when I take a new picture, it shows up in iPhoto with "untitled" under the picture (if you hover over that area). If you look at the info for that pic you see:

Add a Title...

IMG_0589.JPG

then the date.

Then i can click there and give the photo a title (or i can click on the main page under the pic on the word "untitled" and fill it in there...or I can use my little program thingie that will batch give titles)  which i usually do 2016_01_21 Robert Baseball - 01  (for ex)

THEN if you look at the info for that pic:

2016_01_21 Robert Baseball - 01

IMG_0589.JPG

then the date.

Now - for SOME of the photos i imported from iPhoto I can see all the titles I had given the photos back in the iPhoto days on the main Photos page all nicely sitting under each pic. When i look at the info for that pic, it's EXACTLY the same as it is with a photo taken today and renamed by me manually in Photos.

2016_01_21 Robert Baseball - 01

IMG_0589.JPG

then the date.

HOWEVER for other pics imported from iPhoto, i see NO lovely titles under each pic on the main Photos page even though they were created back in iPhoto. And when i look at the info for the pic it looks like this

Add a Title...

2016_01_21 Robert Baseball - 01

then the date.

the name i gave the photo back in iPhotos is where the IMG should be, and the title field is unpopulated.

What gives? why did some pics get their iPhotos title in the proper title field and others didn't? and how can i fix them?

TY!

Lets backup and be clear - we only have words to communicate with so it is critical to use them correctly

there is no service named iCloud Photo Storage. I guess you are talking about Photo Library - is that correct?

iPhoto has no ability to access ICPL so I again guess you are not using iPhoto but are using Photos - is that correct? What version?

You state that you are using OS X 10.11.1 - the current version is 10.11.3 - the first thing you shouldl do is update to the current version so all security upgrades and bug fixes are installed

    You speak of

I can use my little program thingie that will batch give titles)

Again we have no idea what you are talking about and can not see you so you actually have to provide details - my little program thingie is totally meaningless to anyone but you and depending on what it is may or may not be the cause of this

In Photos the file name is not automatically used as the title which might possibly be the answer to your question however that is a bit of a wild guess

    1) I've just updated to 10.11.3

    2) yes, iCloud photo library is what i am using.

    3) i am using Photos, NOT iPhoto

Let me try to explain my issue again:

Today, when I take a new picture, it shows up in Photos on the main page with "untitled" under the picture (if you hover over that area). If you look at the info for that pic you see:

    Add a Title...

    IMG_0589.JPG

    January 28, 2016  9:02 AM

Then i can click there where it says "untitled" and give the photo a title  which i usually use the following format for my naming convention: 2016_01_28 Robert Baseball - 01

THEN if you look at the info for that pic:

    2016_01_28 Robert Baseball - 01

    IMG_0589.JPG

    January 28, 2016  9:02 AM

It is as LarryHN already explained.

iPhoto has a Title field in the  Info panel.  If you do not manually enter a title, iPhoto will use the filename as the default title.

When you open an iPhoto Library in Photos, the filenames are not used as the default titles. Photos will show "untitled" in the info panel.  But if you entered the title manually or by batch changing in iPhoto, these custom titles will appear in Photos in the Title field.

Have a look at the User Tip section:   https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/photos_osx/content?filterID=conte ntstatus%5Bpublished%5D~objecttype~objecttype%5Bdocument%5D

We posted a few Apple Scripts there to help with batch changing in Photos, for example:

Changing the Title to the Filename without Extension

Photos for Mac: Batch Changing the Titles to the Filename

hi there! I tested your amazing script "batch change the title of images to the filename" and it worked like a charm. Is there any way to have the script cut off the .jpg? All the titles I created in iPhotos such as 2012_02_14 Robert Preschool - 23 now say 2012_02_14 Robert Preschool  23.jpg in Photos for Mac

    thoughts?

    Thanks!

Yes.  Use this script: Changing the Title to the Filename without Extension

You can download a compiled version of the script as an application from this tutorial: P01 - Applescripts from Photos’ User Tips Compiled as Applications.
