Q: Intermittent Lag

I have been experiencing a strange "lag" issue over the past week or so. I have a late 2013 iMac 27" that has worked great for two years. Now, I am having this issue that seems to pop up every 10 to 15 seconds or so. I will be typing, and the letters will stop writing on the screen. It seems to get "hung up" for about two seconds and then catches up. It doesn't matter which app I'm in. This "hang up" also happens with any other function I'm attempting, depending on when I am doing it. For example, sometimes I hit a "window close" button and it takes longer that normal. Sometimes I try to switch from desktop to desktop, and it hangs up for a second. My memory usage seems fine with 85% to 90% idle at almost all times. The one big concern that seems to have coincided with the issue is a quiet but repetitive noise coming from the hard drive. I would describe it as a soft "chirp" that seems to be there whenever I'm not doing something else with the hard drive. When I am opening an app or doing a backup, you just hear the normal hard drive background noise. But otherwise, the little chirp is there and repetitive.

I have run disk utilities and Clean My Mac several times. It doesn't seem to make a difference at all. One thing that I notice in console is this constant message:

"Error returned from iconservicesagent"

This is my first post to this community, but I've gotten the answers to many questions in the past just by browsing the threads. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

You've likely identified your own problem. CMM is one of the three worst things you can do to your Mac. Uninstall it per the developers instructions depending on which version of the malware you installed

Clean My Mac is considered malware itself. Macs do not need any cleaning, antivirus or ANY third party maintenance type utilities. Please provide an with EtreCheck report of your system. We can then look for obvious issues. Please click the link, download the app and run the report. Once you have the report, please copy and paste it to your reply to this post.

If you would like more info on what EtreCheck is, simply click the link and you will find a description of the app.

I suspect Clean My Mac is NOT fully uninstalled and you may have also installed some other potentially harmful apps on your system.

The report indicates CleanMyMac3 is still installed so you have yet to fully take care of it. I also noted you may have some Seagate software installed, this is totally unnecessary and may cause lags. In addition I see you use SoundFlower, while this is okay please check with the developer and see if the version you have installed is designed to run with El Capitan. Updating an OS without updating (or at least checking for updates) on application software can be a problem. Whenever  you are considering an update to OS X, also check your apps to see if they are up-to-date as well before and even after an update to OS X. .

When you notice the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

              SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

If you have an account on Pastebin, please don't select Private from the Paste Exposure menu on the page, because then no one but you will be able to see it.

Not if the drive is formatted NTFS. The SeaGate software is likely providing the utility to allow you to write to your external drive.

    Hi Linc,

Here is a snapshot of a few minutes from this morning. It seems like there are a quite a few errors. It is a continuous problem that seems to "hang" up the computer every 5-10 seconds now. It also seems to correspond with a little extra hard drive noise. Normally, my computer was almost always silent, but it seems like there is something "working" in the background. But when I'm actually doing something on the machine, the noise seems to go away, so I don't thing it is a physically failing hard drive. I've had Clean My Mac for over two years, so I don't really feel it is the problem. I removed it and reinstalled it with no changes. I appreciate any additional insight you may have.

Now I am getting these "respawn" messages that seem to correspond with the hard drive noise I am hearing:

This procedure will delete certain temporary and cache files. The files are automatically generated and don't contain any of your data. Occasionally they can become corrupt and cause problems such as yours.

    Please back up all data.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

    /var/folders

Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select

              Services Open

from the contextual menu.* A folder with the odd name "folders" should open.

Inside "folders" are several subfolders, each with a two-character name. Drag all the subfolders except the one named "zz" to the Trash. Don't delete the subfolder named "zz". You'll be prompted for your administrator login credentials.

Restart the computer and empty the Trash.

*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select

              Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You may not see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

If the problem isn't resolved, see below.

Please sign out of iCloud in its preference pane and see whether there's any change. No data will be removed from the servers, and you can retrieve it by signing back in. That said, you should always have a current archive of the data for safety's sake, even if you don't sign out.

If you use iCloud Keychain, when you sign back in to iCloud follow one of the procedures described in this support article to set it up on an additional device.
