Q: iTunes could not backup iPhone because the iPhone disconnected

I've tried seaching for an answer for this problem and can't find one that works. I've tried the basics and even restored my iPhone 4S (and restarted it). Yet, I still keep getting the above message every time I try to back up even though my iPhone is hardwired to my laptop. Any other ideas out there to solve this one?

Thanks!

I had a similar problem. I have my automatic backup set to iCloud, but I sometimes like to backup to the computer (e.g. if I'm about to get a new phone or take the phone in for repair). I connected iPhone to the Mac and manually clicked "Back up Now" but kept getting the disconnect alert.

I deselected options to auto sync and to sync with the phone over wifi, but neither fixed the problem. Finally, I switched the auto backup to this computer, leaving encryption on and leaving those two options unchecked. The backup then worked and I went back to automatically backing up to iCloud.

So resetting the network settings on the phone can work one time and then fail for subsequent backups until reseting them again but I just found another workaround without having to reset network settings on the phone. Try booting your mac into SAFE MODE by holding SHIFT key at startup. Worked like a charm. It keeps 3rd party additions from booting with the system software. I wonder what applications installed all of us have in common. hmmmmmmm.

I don't believe it has something to do with 3rd party software on the Mac.

Tried to backup my iPhone on three different Macs - to no avail. Even set up an external drive / boot volume with a freshly installed OS X El Capitan (definitely no 3rd party apps installed). It simply doesn't work. Oddly enough backing up my iPad works like a charm on all three (four..) machines.

The root of all evils resides in our iPhones (or iPhone's software).

I tried a long list of things to get iTunes to back up my iPhone 6 on my iMac. It would start the backup via wifi, or even USB cable, and stop 1/2 way in saying it disconnected. Rebooting the phone, Mac, disabling wifi, etc. all did not work. What did seem to work, is temporarily disabling the firewall in Norton Security on my Mac. Once this was done, backup seems to work just fine again.

    Erik,

You are not the only one being plagued by this.  I have had issues with iTunes and my iPhone/iPad backup for almost a year.  Every so often it decides to fail backing up and I have to refer back to this article on deleting the old backup files to proceed.  Apple has got some issues here.  I'm currently on 10.10.5 with iTunes 12.2.3.35 and still have had the issue pop up recently.

My settings in iTunes are to encrypt the local backup since that's the only way for your passwords to be saved in the apps you've got installed.  Otherwise when you purchase a new device and do a restore...you'll have to re-enter every password into every application all over again.

It’s quite frustrating to me, the time that I have spent researching how to fix apple’s mistakes, as well as the fact that I still can’t quite simply sync all of my music to my highly expensive phone. Also what angers me is that I have to spend my time ranting about these issues on a post that I’m not even sure will do any good. I’ve had many issues getting my phone to back up because it “disconnected”, when clearly, the phone is still connected to my computer. Also, after trying the plethora of presumably possible fixes to get music to actually play from my phone, and it not working, I just feel like throwing my hands in the air and crying. Apple, please make your products work properly. Why should I have to list all the problems I’ve had, as well as when I’ve had them, as well as what has worked and NOW doesn’t. Apple, don’t put out a product that doesn’t work right.

This is so frustrating to me. As an consumer of the apple culture, I've tried multiple means to back up my iPhone to not only my computer but the cloud. I've deleted prior back ups, changed the folders, synched in airplane mode, etc. To no avail. The nuclear option is to put my phone back into factory mode, but if I can't backup my photos/settings, its  going to waste a lot of time. Apple really is not responding to this thread. Its a problem. I am not sure why they cannot fix it.

The "iPhone cannot back up because iTunes disconnected" is painful message. Everything is connected. I've tried multiple computers. I wait for nearly 20 minutes for the back up to complete, then this error message. What is the work around???

TThanks Lawrence for the exact location and the suggestion on fixing the deletion of backup.

I copy out the previous backup to another folder. Delete the backup, then backup again. It works!

thanks again to all the teacher here!

Also Just to add if your running on PC try using the USB socket on the back on the case as the front sockets produce less power to your device.

NOTE for windows users.  I deleted all back ups but it still did not solve my problem.

I have an HP Envy 15 notebook, which has four USB 3.0 ports, one USB 2.0 port.   After latest 9.2 upgrade and iTune 12.3.2.35 only USB 2 port is working successfully for sync.  All USB 3.0 ports fail with this error

If you see this error as well while sync your iPhone/iPad try a USB 2.0 port if you have the option
