Q: I can't restore my Ipad (third generation)

After running into trouble with Game Center (long story), I decided (at last) to update my Ipad (A1416) to iOS 9, hoping it would solve things.

Now, I'm stuck in restoration mode, with Itunes telling me that it can't restore my device because it is not compatible with the version I wanted to install... (error 3194, I believe).

I've checked the hosts file, but I haven't got the gs.apple.com line, so I guess that's not it.

And... I'm on Itunes 11.4 since my MacBook Pro still runs Mac OS X 10.6.8...

Can anyone help me ? My Ipad is just dead right now...

I Believe the problem is that you have to update iTunes in order to restore and you can't update to iTunes 12.3 without running 10.8.5 at the very least. Mountain Lion is the minimum required now if you want to sync with iTunes and I assume that would also include restoring the device.

This support article states that you should update iTunes first.
If you see Error 3194, Error 17, or 'This device isn't eligible for the requested build' in iTunes - Apple Support

That's what I feared...
But I guess I can restore at least a functionning OS by using a computer already running a more recent OS, not especially mine...

You should be able to restore the device on any computer running the latest version of iTunes as long as there is nothing wrong with the device itself... Hardware issues being one caveat.

It was working perfectly fine until I decided to jump the shark with that restoration
