Q: Cleaning the MacBook optical audio port

Lately, my audio system has no longer been able to pick up any (digital) sound from my MacBook 15" Retina (2013). I have always hooked up my MacBook via a toslink cable to have the digital signal, but the output light is just too weak.

A quick inspection revealed that the lens inside the audio port is simply dirty. I've tried shorter cables, but the signal remains too weak. I've tried cleaning it with a cotton swab, but no improvement.

Any tips on how to clean the little lens inside this port?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.2)
