Q: transferring mail to new computer

I'm moving my info from an older MBP (on OS 10.10.5) to a brand new MBP (on 10.11.2).  I had some issues with the migration as my old laptop was so top heavy with files, it would keep quitting in process.  I finally got everything (I think) moved, but am missing things such as my old emails and data/mailboxes from previous, which I need.  Can I move certain files to this new MBP using file sharing or similar, and, if so, which files do I move, where do I find them on the old laptop and where do I move them to on the new MBP? Thanks in advance for any help!!

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015), OS X El Capitan (10.11.2), old MBP: Macbook Pro 13" OS 10.10.5

    Hey juliekp,

I see that you have a new computer and are in the process of moving your data from your old computer to the new one, but have some questions about some of the data you are attempting to move. The best way to get the data you are concerned about onto your new computer is to use Migration Assistant or Time Machine, and both of these methods are explained in the following article:

Move your content to a new Mac - Apple Support

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204350

Since it sounds like your old computer is having some issues with running Migration Assistant, you may want to connect these computers directly and start the old computer in target disk mode; this step is explained in the following article:

Share files between two computers with target disk mode - Apple Support

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201462

Hope this information helps! Thanks for coming to the Apple Support Communities!

    Thanks Braden,

Unfortunately it doesn't quite help out, I wish it did!

I did use migration assistant, and it seemed to have transferred over most files, but what I'm specifically missing is my old email and it's preferences.  Since I've first posted the question, I've upgraded the OS to El Capitan on the old laptop, and I now have my mail accounts added in and solved on the new laptop, but I wanted to move all of my old email, both mails and mailboxes, to this computer - I refer to it frequently with my work and need to have easy access to it.  For whatever reason, possibly due to the issues I had with the old laptop, none of that moved in the migration.  I can certainly set it up in target disk mode, but what I'd like to do is find out what specific folder/information I need to transfer to the new computer, so I'm not just reinstalling things I already have working on the new laptop.  I've dug through users, libraries, etc, and so far don't seem to be finding anything that feels like it will do the job.  If you can point me to a specific folder, etc that I can move to the new computer so I can resurrect my email correctly, that would be really great

    Thanks!

    Julie

    Hi again juliekp,

I believe the folder you are looking for is referenced in the following article:

    1. Select the email app you want to import messages from.

If you’re importing a mailbox exported from Mail, or a folder (such as POP-eharrold@mail.example.com) from the ~/Library/Mail/V2 folder on another Mac, choose Apple Mail.

Mail (Yosemite): Import or export mailboxes
