Q: Is it typical to have a much longer time connecting NETWORK btw Mac and PC?

I have always used my old desktop PC as a prime computer at home.  I also used a laptop PC, which almost always was networking with the desktop right away.  Then, I bought a MacBook.  At first, I thought that something was wrong with it.  It was searching wi-fi forever that I had problems setting it up even for the first time use.  So wi-fi was OK.  However, there was no network shown.

Then, after few days of using it briefly, the network was connected after 10 minutes being on.

I thought the problem of not having the network was gone, happily.   The next day I turned it on, still, there was no sign of connecting the network.

It was not connected until a few days after that, and it took 30 minutes to get networked.

Then, a few times after that, I figured out, in order to have a network, that I have to make my MacBook stay on for at least 20-30 minutes.

Is it typical to have a much longer time connectingNETWORK btw Mac and PC (I don't mean wi-fi connection, but just the NETWORK part)?

MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2015), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

In system preferences under sharing, click on options and see if you have checked(Share files and folders using SMB-Windows).

My Ginger, I checked "Sharing."  I have had "file sharing" and " printer sharing," but NOT "remote management" or "internet sharing."  I just added the "remote management" now.

In system preferences/sharing,. You have a button for Options. In options you have two boxes you can click on. One will say(Share files and folders using SMB) to click on and then in the account box check on. That is for sharing with windows computers.

Both SMB and AFP under "Options" of File Sharing have already been checked.  However, my account name is unchecked.  I tried to check it, but my MacBook wouldn't let me do it???

You may not have unlocked the padlock at the bottom left and entered your password.

You may need to go to system preferences, users to unlock the padlock and then go back and check the box.  My daughters laptop has Yosemite, so I tried it on her's to see. With her's I had no problem checking that box. I know that you must be in the admin account with a user password.

I did unlock under the user and go back to "Sharing" and then "Option."  It still did not let me check my account

I don't know why you cannot check the box in sharing option. I have yosemite and can check and uncheck with or without the lock being on. I did find by running files sharing between computers that it likes wifi better. Also I used the ip address for the computer I wished to join. Had to make sure I got the user name right. I used the go menu/connect to server and typed in the ip address. This opened a box to enter the user name and password to the computer I wished to connect to. As far as the box in options, the only thing I found was that you have to be in an admin account that has a user password enabled.  Possibly this will help, with the connecting links also. https://support.apple.com/kb/PH18709?locale=en_US

My Ginger, thank you very much for everything you advised.  I guess that something is not configured correctly for my MacBook.  I did read and tried the method on the link you provided.  I am not sure why the title and the content do not exactly match.  As I tried it, it's pretty much working for Windows users only.  Thank you anyway for all your effort trying to help

The following assumes you are logged into an administrative user.

Usual trigger is either a problem with the Wi-Fi router (settings, power output, configuration, etc), some sort of interference with the Wi-Fi signal (built-up areas can have awful Wi-Fi interference problems), or a problem with the Wi-Fi configuration or Wi-Fi hardware on the Mac.   That other systems are accessing the Wi-Fi means the Wi-Fi hardware on the router is probably working correctly.

What is the specific hardware you're using for Wi-Fi (vendor, model), and what sort of Wi-Fi network configuration are you using?  (WPA2 encryption with a pre-shared key — PSK — would be typical.  Unencrypted and WEP networks are best avoided.)

Are you in a built-up area, or otherwise located in some area with multiple Wi-Fi devices in use?

Does the MacBook connect to wireless networks elsewhere with similar problems, or with no issues?  Is this localized to your network, or is it a general issue with this MacBook?

Do the console logs — visible via Console.app — indicate some details on why the Wi-Fi network is not connecting?   (These log messages will be cryptic, there'll be lots of unrelated and sometimes ominous-looking text in the logs, and — if you post any of that log data here — please make sure that there are no confidential details in what's posted, please don't post more than one or two blocks of any repeating blocks of messages, and please don't post more than about a hundred lines or so of log data at most.  Thanks!)

Unrelated to the Wi-Fi issue, I'd strongly recommend getting Time Machine going, or some other backup solution.   Your own data is among the most difficult data to replace, if the MacBook is lost or stolen or damaged.   All storage devices eventually and inevitably fail, too.  Have backups.

Hi, MrHoffman, Xifinity is the wi-fi vendor and I am using WPA2 encryption.  Now, after answering your question, I recall that the first time I tried installing the hardware with some difficulty and confusion of the password of the device.....  Although the issue is no longer existing, I think that there is something there still not completely working properly.

    I don't think I am in a built-up area.

So far, I have not brought the MacBook out of my home yet, so not sure if it would work somewhere else.  Yes, definitely, gotta try that!

Thank you for your advice and reply.

Down at the bottom of the link I gave you, was another link for setting up Mac to Windows. Just to cover the options for both sides.
