I understand you were going to update your MacBook Air to El Capitan and left it downloading the update, but now you have no video.
Although this article is titled for external displays, some steps apply to internal displays as well.

For example:
If starting in safe mode doesn't resolve the issue, reset your Mac's NVRAM and SMC to reset the video ports on your Mac to their defaults.
