Q: I have to go in to single-user mode to boot in OS X.

As the title says, I have to press Command + S. Then type "/sbin/mount -uw /" and then "exit" to boot in OS X. When I don't go to single-user mode. I see the apple logo and the progress bar but the progress bar only gets to 3/4 of the way and then the computer shuts down by itself. I also have bootcamp on my hard drive with windows 10 on it (mainly for videogames) and I can boot in windows 10 just fine. Is there like a way to make the code: "/sbin/mount -uw / permanent so I don't have to go to single-user mode EVERY TIME want to boot in OS X?

Any help is appreciated, thank you.

No worries. Very surprising that OSX root ("/") becomes read-only. El Capitan SIP can also cause issues. Let us see what solves the issue.

Your EtreCheck reported El Capitan 10.11.1. In App Store, if you click on Updates, are there any pending Software Updates? If there are, are you comfortable updating to latest El Capitan version?

Yes, there are pending Software Updates. Seeing that I don't have a lot of options right now, I am going to update it to the latest version of El Capitan.

This is what happened: I booted in to OS X by going into single user mode (as usual). Then I proceeded to download the software update for El Capitan. After that the computer proceeded to go in to a white screen with the apple logo saying it is installing. The computer then rebooted, turning itself off when it got to 3/4 of the way on the progress bar. I then booted it up again in single user mode. After that it continued to installing the update and then I landed on the desktop of OS X. I tried to turn the system off and on. But with no luck, the computer turned off when it got to 3/4 of the way and the only way to boot it up is through single user mode.

Can you switch to OS X and post the output of following command from OS X Terminal?

    diksutil cs list

    You can also run

    diskutil repairDisk disk0

    diskutil repairDisk disk1

Do you have Bootcamp in your Control Panel? If yes, can you look at Boot Camp: Set the default operating system and set the default OS to be OSX?

I have Windows as my main operating system right now, because I use that the most. But the only possible way for me to go in to OS X is to change the default operating system in the Boot Camp Icon. After changing the operating system then I must restart and go to single-user mode and do what I always do.

If I try to change the operating system during startup (by holding down ALT), it will not let me go to single-user mode when I change it from Windows to OS X.
