If you connect the device to iTunes and click on Update, what does it tell you? The original iPad can update to iOS 5.1.1, but that is all. Others can update further.

Jan 31, 2016 11:54 AM in response to 2Yrkezby Niel,Update it from iTunes on a computer as described at the bottom of this article; there isn't a Software Update option in General on iOS versions prior to 5.0. It can only be updated directly to the newest iOS release supported by the device’s hardware, which is iOS 9.2.1 for devices with a dual-core processor.
The maximum iOS version for the third generation iPod touch and original iPad is 5.1.1.

Jan 31, 2016 11:55 AM in response to 2Yrkezby AJ397,The original iPad can only be updated to iOS 5.1.1. If you have the iPad 2 or later, you can update to iOS 9.2.1.
Update the iOS software on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support- You won't see the Wi-Fi update option on iOS 4.
