Jan 31, 2016 3:24 PM in response to sbermanby Arcane Questions,the technique I used is the same. the behavior, however, is not as described in the article -- it relentlessly puts me into full screen mode for a single window. nor is it the same as used to work in earlier revs of 10.11 without a hitch. I've tried on 3 machines with 10.11.3 and it fails to work on any.

Focus on apps in full screen or Split View
Please note the following points:
1. If some apps open in Split View and others don't, the latter need to be updated by their developers to support it. If an app doesn't support full-screen mode, it also doesn't support Split View.
2. If no apps open in Split View, follow the instructions in the first support article linked above to enable "Displays have separate spaces."
