Try running Setup Assistant again and selectively restore items. When you get most things restore, you can enter Time Machine to finish recovering your data.

You shouldn't have to create a new account. That is an option. Instead of running Setup Assistant again, you can try restoring data in smaller amounts by using the Time Machine application.

You are welcome. Try opening the Time Machine application while booted normally (no Setup Assistant). Selectively restore the data you want. To select folders next to each other, you can hold down the shift key. What is your other question?

Reference that link, it sounds like some troubleshooting needs to be done. It may not be the OS, but 3rd party applications like anti-virus programs that are slowing the OS.

Try running this program and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read.

One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install the new OS, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won’t have to go though the revert process.

Check to make sure your applications are compatible.

    Application Compatibility

    Applications Compatibility (2)

    El Capitan 10.11 Compatibility information

Open Disk Utility, select your hard drive (step 1), then the Partition tab (step 2), and select the partition. Using the /// at the bottom move it up (step 3) until the size box decrease by about 50 GB. Select the newly created space and hit the + button (step 4). Name it something and select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format (step 5). Then hit the Apply button(step 6). Download the installer from the App Store and when it starts, point it at the new partition. You might want to make a copy of the installer outside the Applications folder to avoid having to re-download it in the future. Once installed, go to System Preferences/Startup Disk, select the new partition and reboot. Test away.

You have adware installed. Also uninstall/disable the Safari extension SearchMe.

    Manual method:

Malware – Adware removal – Apple Support

Or download this program which was written by Thomas Reed, a long time poster. The program will do the work for you which makes it easy. If you are uncertain about downloading programs, try the manual method.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac      10.8 and later

What should I do if Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac didn't solve my problem?

    Try uninstalling RIM.
