Q: Wi-Fi @  TV

Hello folks,

So I got this stupid situation which I couldn't figure out: I travel frequently with my  TV and trying to access the internet in the hotels I stay in but I get stuck at some point where I access the hotel network regularly "through my iPhone or Mac" and then a pop menu shows for authentication to enter the username and password and access the internet at the end.

Now the question is: how the **** can I get that pop up menu or enter the authentication details for the apple TV and use access the internet through?

Please help if someone went through a similar situation or has an idea!

Thanks,

Hassan

    You can't.

You might have a word with reception incase they have another way of connecting, but in most cases they will be unable to help you.

The Apple TV does not support captive networks. if you write down your MAC address the hotel may be able to connect it that way. or another option (I travel quit a bit as well) I have bought the HDMI dongle and connect my iphone/iPad/MacBook directly to the tv so I don't actually travel with the ATV.  I have other devices that limit the weight and volume for packing and ease of use...

Why don't you use your iPhone or iPad to connect to the hotel internet, then connect your Apple TV to the personal hotspot on iPhone or iPad?  If you have a Mac, you could share your internet connection from your Mac.

(Probably settings instructions somewhere for El Capitan, but I think it's the same.)

not sure why this is directed to me since I don't travel with my ATV. However, at least with the iPhone you can either connect to wifi of be a wifi hotspot but not both. Not sure if the Mac allows more flexibility as it relates to connecting to wifi as well as being a hotspot at the same time...

Sorry, meant to reply to OP.  However, of course one can use your iPhone simultaneously as a personal hotspot and connect to wifi.  Affects download speed on iPhone for sure.

After further research, you can share an ETHERNET connection via wifi from the Mac. But like with the iPhone, it cannot send /receive wifi at the same time. So assuming the hotel offers an Ethernet port in room you could share the connection from a Mac to the ATV. But you cannot connect the Mac to wifi and expect it to be a wifi hotspot for other devices at the sametime...

On my iPhone, if I am connected to wifi it will disable the wifi connection as soon as I enable the hotspot function...

If other devices have joined your Personal Hotspot using Wi-Fi, you can use only cellular data to connect to the Internet from the host device.

You are right.  My statement that one can simultaneously use the iPhone to share wifi with another device and connect to wifi itself is basically incorrect.  If I am using my iPhone for wifi, the external device is connecting to the iPhone via cellular data.  My apologies for my hasty (and ignorant) statement.
