Q: My scanner is not working after upgrade to El Capitan

I've upgrade to OX El Capitan 10.11.3 and since then my scanner Epson XP-600 is not working.

I have installed all the epson software updates. The printer is working cause (I have them all in one), but not the scanner.

I tried to do what other users have suggested like reset TWAIN devices but when I'm going to Image Capture this choice is not given to me.

I am totally disappointed with El Capitan, it has even caused problems with my mails.

Could anybody please help since I'm using this scanner for business?

Thank you in advance

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)

Apple is not responsible for ensuring that Epson provides up-to-date scanner drivers.  Epson is responsible for updating their drivers, and either providing them to Apple, or publishing them on their website.  Looks like the last update for the scanner drivers was on 07/09/2015 (http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?oid=201987&infoType=Dow nloads&platform=OSF_M_X11).  Is the scanner listed in System Preferences/Printer & Scanners.  I know the printer is listed, but is the scanner function listed?

Thank you very much for your reply.

Yes the scanner is listed to the system preferences/printer & scanners as well as the printer with the status: idle.

But when I press "open scanner", it does nothing.

I did instal again today like yesterday the last update for the scanner drivers from the link that you are mentioning above but still nothing...

I will try to swing by and see my user who has a scanner attached, and what I did to get it to work after the upgrade to EC.  I do remember that she had an issue to getting the scanner to respond from within an Adobe product, so she thought things were broken (the scanner was 4+ years old, and the Adobe product a CS6 app) I was able to get it to scan from outside Adobe, using the Canon installed software, if I remember correctly. She was only one minor revision behind the latest available.  What happens when you try using the OEM software (that came from Epson)?

I have not had a chance yet to see my user, but there is this thread talking about Epson scanners that might also shed some light:What happened to my scanner El Capitan?

I've checked the conversation with subject "What happened to my scanner El Capitan" but unfortunately it didn't helped me as scanning from Image Capture after resetting TWAIN devices as is suggested is not working.

I've contacted Epson Support and talked about this problem. I will try to explain to you their answer but it's not too easy for me as English is not my language.

They said that it is all Apple's responsibility as Apple is not using "Epson Scan" for the last three editions of El Capitan but "Image Capture".

They said they have a written order from Apple not to update their drivers as El Capitan would do it automatically when installing the upgrade and give you the change to scan with Image Capture.

This is not happening though and I can't work. Epson said as their scanner (as a machine)  is working perfectly it is El Capitan and Apple's responsibility to give us a solution cause it was their decision not giving us the option to work with Epson scan.

I AM TOTALLY DISAPPOINTED WITH ALL THESE, I CANT SEE A SOLUTION, I SHOULDN'T UPGRADE TO EL CAPITAN!!! I JUST CAN'T WORK WITH MY SCANNER ANY MORE. A SCANNER THAT IS WORKING PERFECTLY RIGHT WITH PCS.

Forgive me for my English and thank you for trying to help me.

I'm so sorry to hear about that. I am an examination administrator in Greek Area working for UK. On Monday I have to scan application forms and send them to head office in UK and I can't do it. This is causing a terrible problem to my business.

Why Apple is not giving us an answer?

Thank you for your help. It is working! I am going to use this probably but I must admit I am still disappointed with Apple cause to make my scanner work again using this www.hamrick.com means I have to pay either 29,95 for one year or 69,95 for unlimited upgrades.

    Cheers!

I understand your disappointment but it's not Apple's responsibility to make sure that ALL old hardware works with their modenn OS. Epson is responsible to make sure their hardware works regardless of what they're telling you, and that to a point ends when hardware reaches a certain age. You're running a business, it's a business expense.

No Mike, but Apple should be upfront with disclosures about what they know doesn't work, and should include that in updated readme files distribution with OSX installers.   The fact is, this is NOT a third party problem. Early adopters of El Capitan have been reporting broken i/o to firewire scanners ever since El Capitan was released.  As far as I've been able to determine, Epson cannot fix a firewire i/o protocol that Apple stopped supporting. I intentionally delayed upgrading to 10.11 to avoid unpleasant surprises that should have been disclosed.

Apple should just say, "El Capitan no longer supports scanners connected via Firewire. Scanners with both USB and Firewire connectivity will still work if connected via a USB cable."

It took me several hours to figure out that the solution was to use USB.  Shame on Apple for wasting so much of my and other users time by failing to make that simple disclosure.

There are now a bunch of Printer software/driver updates available from Apple.

Go to the App Store > Updates and see if there are update for you printer/scanner.

    or

Go to the Manufactures website for updates

Finally here is an Apple page listing the latest updates and links to manufactures websites… Printer and scanner software available for download for your Mac - Apple Support

    Hope this helps, Greg

Apple was upfront in 2012 when they did away with firewire ports, you had three years to adjust but didn't. I bought a new car recently and was very upset to find out that my collection of cassette tapes won't play.....who do I blame?
