Q: iPhoto 11 9.4.3 and performing an OS X upgrade from Mountain Lion direct to El Capitan

MY goal is to be able to run the most recent version of iPhoto before it was dropped after I upgrade to El Capitan Directly from Mountain Lion.

I checked and I do have the iPhoto application in my purchases in the App Store but it is dated in 2012 as a purchase.

I believe it is the 9.4.3 as that is what I have operating now.

I have read some ideas that after upgrading I will be able to install the iPhoto, if it were in my purchases, but I do not know whether my particular 2012 purchase would install the latest version for sure. Can anybody clarify this concern for me? I do not know whether jumping 3 upgrades will affect the installing of the most recent iPhoto within El Capitan?

Also, did I read correctly that I should trash the current iPhoto application before the upgrade for some reason?

Forgive my ignorance, but when I start up the installation after the El Capitan upgrade, will anything like my iPhoto libraries be automatically utilized without prompting By Photos?

THanks for your assistance and if I were to need to know anything else, please direct me accordingly.

I believe the process you are referring to is contained in this support article by Community Support member Barney-15E:

Can't Update iPhoto because it is not available in the App Store

    1. Yes, it will.

    2. No, it won't. As long as it's associated with your Apple ID, that doesn't matter.

    3. You'll need to move the existing iPhoto application into a location not indexed by Spotlight(such as the Trash) or delete it to be able to get version 9.6.1.

    4. If you've updated iPhoto, choose Applications from the Finder's Go menu and open it. If desired, drag it to the Dock and remove Photos from there.

Thanks for the fast response you two.

For number 3, is this done before I upgrade The OS X to El Capitan?

Thinking ahead, if I were to connect a camera to the computer after the OS X upgrade, what photo program will be activated, iPhoto or photos, in the event I choose not to trash the Photos app?

IF I were to open Photos to check it out, will it mess with my iPhoto libraries?

    Thanks

    1. It doesn't matter.

    3. No; it'll make its own copy of the default one while hardlinking the media files to save space.

You can run both Photos and iPhoto side by side. I have been doing it since I originally upgraded to Yosemite. But open the link I provided which gives you the step by step instructions for getting iPhoto upgraded so you can continue to use it on El Cap.

When you upgrade, your iPhoto Library will be imported to Photos, so at that moment in time, both the iPhoto and the Photos library will be identical. You can then go into Preferences in each app to set up your preferences as to which app will be launched when you connect a camera, which app will be used for your Photo Stream, iCloud Photo Sharing, etc.

Photos also comes with the option to use the iCloud Photo Library, but be sure that you understand what it is and how it works before signing up:

iCloud Photo Library FAQ - Apple Support

iCloud Photo Library Help - Apple Support

Personally, I do not use the iCloud Photo Library.

Originally I had my iCloud set up (under Preferences) on iPhoto, but have now set it up on Photos instead. Sometimes I switch it back. The only things that the iCloud settings under Preferences controls is where your Photo Stream and Shared Photo Streams will go and where Shared Photo Streams that you are creating will come from.

The Help option in the Photos app also has a helpful set of instructions, a tour, etc. which you should check out once your iPhoto Library has completed the import and you can go in and fool around with Photos.

If you decide to run both apps, then edits you make on one will not be reflected in the other - they would work independently from one another. But, you can move your preferences back and forth as I indicated, and if you want to import to each, then change your Import options, do not delete your photos once you have imported them to one of the apps, and then go in change your import options to the other and import them to that app.

    Best of luck,

    OOops!

I am not very good at this. I replied to myself on this thread but wanted to direct it to you. I hope you can read my reply on this thread as I can't figure out how to copy and paste the question I posted.

    THanks for your help.

The upgrade was a success and I chose to trash the iPhoto 9.4.3 before the process. It worked as you both said it would. Thanks for the guidance and prompt replies. I'd like to mark this as solved but I do not see where that tab is located.

    Thanks once again.
