Q: Adding LaserWriter 4/600 PS

Hi there, folks

I have an Apple LaserWriter 4/600 PS that I do NOT know how to configure/add printer.

I have a LocalTalk to Ethernet Bridge (Dayna Mini EtherPrint) and a Linksys 5-Port Workgroup Hub.

I previously had no printer(s) and/or Ethernet device(s)/service(s). Using Wi-Fi for Internet Access.

Do I need the Ethernet hub or can I just connect with the LocalTalk to Ethernet Bridge?

I have previously used the Apple LaserWriter 4/600 PS on a Windoze PC running OS XP and a Power Macintosh 8600.

My particulars: MacMini (4,1), OS X (10.6.8).

Any insight/input/info would be greatly appreciated

Thank You for your time, James

    Yeah, Mine looks similar, Grant

Maybe the host does NOT support either IPP 1.1 and/or IPP 1.0?

I was careful to choose all my host names as alpha and numeric and underscore and dash, but NO SPACES, and limited to eight characters.

All my Shared printer names are similar, but are limited to 12 characters. And I never re-used the built-in name of the Printer. It was supposed to be more trouble-free. But I do not remember why.

Maybe someone else who is following can remember why.

    Thx, Jan

I have bookmarked the link. I will check the iBook for AirPort software. If not installed, a hunting I will go!

Jan, do you know if there was a "newer" revision/update of the AirPort card (801.11b)?

If not, like I've said previously, I will check my router settings for Wi-Fi security protocol(s).

It looks like the item: TL-WA890EA, is EOL (End-of-Life) and is NOT currently an available item @ TP-Link.

I have emailed the Sales Dept. @ TP-Link about this item.

    Thx, Jan (James)

I have read about a number of original AirPort card (802.11b) versions/variants. These may well be mainly firmware revisions, which may or may not mean that earlier versions could be updated to the same level. It is not easy to get a complete picture.

The laserWriter 4/600 is not very complicated, and does not have a lot of memory. I find some PostScirpt and pdf documents are just too complicated for it.

Try printing something easy, like a letter. Then you can see whether the connection is working, and save the heavy debugging of complex postscript for later.

    Jan,

I have the AirPort software on my MacMini, now I just need to get it over to the iBook!

Is there anyway to see which firmware version(s) is on/in the AirPort card, System Profiler?

Yeah, it's krazy how "fuzzy" the info is about the AirPort card, actually a little nutz to boot also!

I just remembered I have an "old" AirPort base station (the saucer looking one) without the power supply!

I have tried to get the power supply from the vendor/supplier I got the base station from, but he is hard to get a hold of!

Maybe I could get the specs. for the base station and get a compatible power supply?

My thinking with this device is: Plug into AC/Plug into LAN port on Router/Try to connect iBook to this device?

My original reason for get the "old" AirPort base station was to set-up the LW 4/600 PS as a "remote" printer.

Jan, thank you for your efforts/time on my behalf, Very Much Appreciated!

    Thx, Jan (James)

    Grant,

Yeah, she (the LW 4/600 PS) may not be the most fastest/powerful/greatest/etc., but she's a small wonder onto herself!

I have upgraded her memory/RAM to six (6) MB, that "should" help with the more complex print job(s). PostScript Level 2, if I remember correctly.

I was able to print (via TextEdit) a report from an EtreCheck run, NO problems!

Maybe I could print the "more" complex print job(s) as a PostScript file?

    Thx, Grant (James)

    James,

If it is an AirPort Extreme Base Station, does it say something like Model No: A1034 (the printed grey text)? Does it have one WAN port (Ethernet), one LAN port (Ethernet), one USB port, and possibly an RJ-11 phone port (the variant with the internal modem is especially interesting, since it can be used not only for dial-up but also for dial-in)?

    https://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/0/MA436/en_US/AirPortExtremeBaseStationSe tupGuide.pdf

If so, look for details (a magnifying glass may be of help) about the power input in the aforementioned grey text (this could be something like Input: 5.1V DC 2.4A, with the centre power port pin to plus). It should not be too difficult to locate a suitable power adapter.

Also, could you please provide details (exact make and model) about your main router?

I was able to print (via TextEdit) a report from an EtreCheck run, NO problems!

Then your little printer is working, and it is only a matter of finding HOW complex a document it can print without choking!

    Congratulations!

The Airport card in my blue iBook reports version 4.1 of everything, so I think the suggestion of "3.3 is the minimum" is likely to already be in place. But I live far from my neighbors, so I do not use any Wi-Fi encryption.

    Jan,

    Jan, you nailed it (Deluxe/Outstanding/Super/etc.)!

The AEBS is Model # A1034 with an internal modem (RJ-11 jack). Dial-up/Dial-in, how old skool!

Plus, the AEBS has an optional jack/port for an external antenna, too!

    Ports.jpg

Jan, all the technical specs. mention input electrical like 120V/50-60Hz/etc., but nothing about the actual output of the power supply (Red Rum)!

Thx for the link to the AEBS Set-Up Guide!

Yeah, the printing on the AEBS is EXTREMELY hard to read with the naked eye! I have magnifying glass in hand...

Jan, my thinking on the AEBS, is to piggy back off my router using one (1) of the available LAN port(s) & connect to the AEBS using either the Ethernet (WAN?/LAN?) port & try connecting to the AEBS with the iBook SE. Creating a separate Wi-Fi bridge/network.

    I have a Tenda FH1201 (AC1200), but I can NOT configure via Wi-Fi, that's why I have a 50 foot Ethernet cable!

The router is configured for WPA2 Personal, so NO soap with the iBook (WPA on my AirPort card?).

    Thx, Jan (James)

    Grant,

How did you find your revision # of your AirPort card, via System Profiler?

Yeah, Grant, you do not need encryption, but I have neighbors to the left/right/behind with Wi-Fi, so I need encryption.

Besides, I've seen people in their vehicles parked outside my residence with laptops/cell phones!

Looking for "open" Wi-Fi(?), or who knows what else they may be up to (hackers?).

I'd rather be SAFE instead of SORRY!

    Thx, Grant (James)

    >all the technical specs. mention input electrical like 120V/50-60Hz/etc., but nothing about the actual output of the power supply

Please see my previous reply again. I was referring to the rather faint grey text printed on the base station cover (underneath). If your base station has the power input values indicated above, you should not have a problem finding a power supply.

The best thing would, of course, be to find an original Apple power adapter. If this for some reason is not possible, an appropriate high-quality third-party power adapter with the correct plug ought to work, too.

Just a general note about power adapters.

The power adapter output DC voltage (V) must never be higher than the input DC voltage (V) specified for a device (a certain tolerance, perhaps up to +/- 5%, is normal).

The maximum output current (A) handling capacity of the power adapter must never be lower than a current (A) value indicated for a device.

Always observe DC power plug polarity.

    Jan,

That's how I found the Model # for the AEBS.

Like I said, "the printing on the AEBS is EXTREMELY hard to read with the naked eye! I have magnifying glass in hand..."

Yeah, I've tried to get an OEM power supply from the vendor/supplier, but like I've said: "but he is hard to get a hold of!", the son of a gun!

Jan, any suggestions for sourcing a high quality power supply, i.e., BestBuy/Radio Shack/You-Do-It-Electronics/On-Line Retailer/etc.?

    Thx, Jan (James)
