Q: Time Machine can't find new hard drive connected to Airport Extreme
Airport Extreme version 7.6.4
OSX 10.11.3
My previous external hard drive has run out of space for backups.
I purchased a 5TB Seagate hard drive, erased and reformatted it for the Mac according to Seagate instructions: Select OX Extended (Journaled), GUID Partition Map
Based on instructions found herehttps://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202380 concerning transferring a time machine backup to a new disk permissions in the drive's "get info" box, I unchecked "Ignore ownership on this volume." (Note that I decided not to copy over the old backups, but instead start with a complete initial backup on an empty disk)
I have turned Time Machine off on the two computers it was backing up
I have deleted the previous hard drive's name from Time Machine
I have plugged the hard drive into the Airport Extreme, and using the Airport Utility have used edit>Disks to see that the new drive showing is up in the Partitions field and noting there are 5 TB free. However, the update button is greyed out, I assume because update is to change user permissions, not to add the volume.
When I go into Time Machine Preferences on both of my Macs, and click on "Select BackUp Disk" and then "Other Airport Time Capsule" it takes me to Airport Utility with no further interaction path. I can click on "edit" on the Airport Extreme and then "Disks" and, as noted above, I see the new drive listed, but do not have any "select" option to be able to get it to show up as a backup option in Time Machine.
