It does not work here with Apple Mail 7.3 on Mac OS X 10.9.5 (Mavericks). I tried also the terminal and not selecting the VIP mailfolder to no avail. Any idea? Thanks.

Update: the VIPSenders.plist regenerates each time that Apple Mail is open (after being trashed). Even more, if I open it and delete contents with PlistEdit Pro, save it and open Apple Mail again, all is regenerated, including such deleted contents of VIPSenders.plist.

How to delete it for ever?

I could fix it this way!.

    1. Add another extra VIP in Apple Mail.

    2. Delete the extra one from Apple Mail.

    3. Delete the first one from Apple Mail.

    4. Delete VIPSenders.plist as mrfcobf said.

    Fixed!

After removing the VIP's from the mailbox, quit mail and relaunch it holding the Shift key.

I have the same problem.  The VIP mailbox appeared out of nowhere and is empty but I cannot delete it.  This advice looked good except that I upgraded to Yosemite a few weeks ago.  BIG, BIG MISTAKE.  It is complete rubbish.

I cannot find anything you mention in your advice but then I cannot find anything in Yosemite.  They have completely screwed the SEARCH facility and so many other things no longer work the way they used to.  I cannot find MAIL.  The only MAIL I can find is MAIL SCRIPTS or the MAIL.app.   LIBRARY has ceased to exist as has UTILITIES and Yosemite has messed up my MAIL SEARCH as well.

There are all kinds of other problems with Yosemite but Apple don't care.  They just say re-install.  Apple is getting as bad as Microsoft.

After none of the solutions really yielded results, I tried the following: Click the drop-down arrow on the left of the VIP mailbox; on each of the supposed 'VIPs', I right-clicked and chose option - 'Remove fromVIP'. Voila! The mailbox disappeared! Luckily there were just a couple of 'VIPs' to be removed in my case! Hope this helps.

Apple support walked me through this problem. Select an email (either incoming or sent) of the VIP. Hover your mouse over the VIP name and select the down arrow. One of the choices will be to delete the VIP. The mailbox should disappear immediately or after you close and restart Mail.

This finally worked for me.  Curios, what the HECK does that do?  Yes, I can search the 'net and see, but if you have a quick answer...

    THANKS!

I do not use the right click feature on my mouse. So I have to use the control button on my keyboard, but only once the item you want removed is high lighted

    Hi....

Yes but what if one dont have a mail from the sender, then you can't get to the point where you can delete from the vip list... Any good ideas ?

You should not need an email from the person. The VIP mailbox will be on the right. hi light it and press control delete. Please see the photo I have attached. I have hi lighted the vip box and then pressed control and clicked the mouse. It opens this little menu. Proceed from there.

None of these solutions work with El Capitan and Mail 9.2

The "VIP" is also on my phone but not in my contacts so I cannot delete it anywhere. There is no mail associated with this person either.

Are you holding the control button while clicking your mouse?? It should open the little menu and allow you to proceed.....

It offers Remove from VIP'sScreen Shot 2016-03-13 at 2.48.18 PM.png

You must high light what you want removed with the mouse then hold the control button and click mouse again. It should open this menu.....
