Q: Printer only prints on shutdown/restart

My documents only print if I shutdown or restart.

My printer (Epson WorkForce 845) has been working fine; 100% up until recently.  I made no changes that I am aware of.  I have allowed software updates from Apple.  My laptop (MBPro 13 retina - 0SX 10.10.5) has stopped printing with this error: "The printer is not responding."

The driver is current.  I have deleted the printer, and re-installed it with these results:   The printer shows up in the list of printers to add.  When I use AirPrint to add the printer, it fails: "Unable to communicate with the printer at this time.".  But if I use "EPSON WorkForce 845 Series" - Bonjour Multifunction" it adds the printer.  Then my documents only print after I shutdown/restart.

I have reset the printing system. None of these steps have fixed the problem.  My wife can print from her laptop as normal (same network).

My document prints when I shutdown my laptop (or after the shutdown phase of a restart).  This is not an acceptable resolution.  I'm pulling out my hair - and I don't have that good of a supply to begin with.  Anybody have any idea what I might try next?

I've been using Mac's since the early 90's, so I'm not without experience.  But I'm a user not a programmer or an expert.  I'd appreciate any help I can get, thank you.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5), null

Sounds to me like you have an issue with Bonjour. It would explain why the AirPrint printer fails when you try to create it.

As a test I would use an alternate protocol to Bonjour. You will need to determine what IPv4 address the Epson is using. You should be able to determine that via its control panel. With the IPv4 address, select to add the printer but change from the Default view which shows the advertised printers and select the IP icon. Then enter the IPv4 address of the Epson and set the Protocol to HP Jetdirect-Socket. Leave the Queue field blank and change the Name from the IP address to the Epson model. The last step is to select the Epson driver via the Use menu. With this printer added see if you can print.

PAHU: I followed the steps.  When it was trying to create the printer it failed: "Unable to connect to '192.168.1.233' due to an error.  Would you still like to create the printer?"  I said yes, (figured nothing to lose).  Problem persists:  "The printer is not responding."

I don't know enough about networks to know if this is a network issue, but I can add this:  I printed out the network status of my printer, it says "Pass" when it checks network connection. However there is also a comment: "A router/access point channel conflict has been detected.  If you have problems printing or scanning, improve your wireless network."  The printer is literally 12 inches away from the Apple Time Capsule (which is the access point it is connected to).  Network Status report on the printer says Signal Strength: Excellent.

    ...?

Sorry for the delay. Just got the email alert to say that you responded.

With that result there are two likely causes. The first is that the IP address is incorrect. I would assume this not be the case as you mentioned getting a network status page from the printer. But just to be sure, enter that IP address as the URL in a web browser, i.e. http://192.168.1.233. This should result in you connecting to the internal web page of the printer. If it doesn't then re-check the IP address.

The second cause is the Protocol. Since I asked you to use HP Jetdirect, then I would say try to add the printer again, but this time select Line Printer Daemon for the Protocol.

    PAHU,

I really appreciate your help.  I followed your steps using Line Printer Daemon instead.  I got a pop-up:  "Unable to verify the printer on your network.  Would you still like to create the printer?"   I selected "continue".  It created a printer but it still does not work.  However I can add one new discovery:  I reset the printer system again, and added the printer normal way.  (Printer added correctly.)  Then I switched user account.   It prints successfully from both a guest account (standard user) and a newly created admin account.  This is nuts...  I am at a loss.  This seems to suggest that the problem is not with my operating system or the printer or the network, but somewhere within my primary user account.  I have no idea what to do next.  So far Google search has produced nothing close...

Here is more to add:  When I try to open my browser to connect to the printer, it fails, the connection times out.  BUT, if I log off my primary user, and use a browser in my guest account, it connects pronto...  (I'm running out of hair to pull out.)
