I had the same problem. My solution:

Mac Book Pro, late 2014, El Capitan.

I unplug and replug the USB cable each time I need to print a document. I click on Print and then I plug the USB cable. Printer prints.

    Hi all,

After a long email exchange with Canon support UK we figured out that the firmware had to be updated and they directed me to the firmware update tool. Unfortunately, the Mac OS X tool is broken and cannot see that the printer is connected. Therefore, I disconnected the printer, started Parallels, connected the printer to Parallels and opened the Windows browser towards the same Canon support website. I downloaded the same firmware tool for Windows which worked. Then I shutdown Parallels and connected the printer again to Mac OS X and bang, it started working right away, no more disconnecting and reconnecting the USB cable.

    Best regards,

    Claudiu

    Hi, Claudiu,

I'm not currently running Parallels. When I get it, though, and a Windows license, I'll download the appropriate driver. So thanks for the tip.

Just for clarity - who broke the Mac OS X tool ?

    Best regards,

    Hi Agneta,

I don't know if the Canon firmware update tool (http://www.canon.co.uk/support/consumer_products/products/printers/laser/i-sensy s_lbp6020.aspx?type=firmware&firmwaredet…) for my printer doesn't work just for me. It so happened that when I tried to update the firmware it couldn't see the printer as being online, hence the idea to use the Windows app since it would have the same effect on the printer. Maybe the firmware update tool for your printer will work just fine. Anyway, this was the issue and their solution fixed the problem (it had to be escalated to the next level though).

    Best regards,

    Claudiu

I'm glad it worked for you. The new firmware won't install on mine. That's all it says, can't install. Maybe one has to remove the old one first? I'll try with the new auto shutdown tool later. For the time being the unplug-plug method works. I print very little.

Any new findings I'd be happy to know about them. Meanwhile there's an OS X El Capitan update 10.11.3

    Have a nice day!

    Hello AgnetaW,

Canon has released a v3.86 of the CAPT driver (previously the version was 3.85). This version 3.86 resolves the issue with the printer failing after a period of time with a USB connection. Here is a link to the CAPT v3.86 driver from Canon Australia. According to Service Information you can install v3.86 over the top of v3.85. Canon does state that you need to power of the printer and unplug the USB cable and then run the v3.86 installer. Once the installation is complete, then reconnect the USB cable and power the printer back on.

Hi Shane. Sorry for the delay in replying. Just got an email alert now. Something wrong with Apple system.

If you still have the issue then can I ask you to open System Information and select Printers in the left sidebar. If this is the only printer then its information will appear in the right pane. If you have more than one printer, then select the Canon in the top right pane to see its information in the bottom right pane. Can you copy this information and paste back here for me to check.

Thank you. That is the info I need.

If you look at the entry labelled URI you can see the protocol is set to IPP (Internet Printing Protocol) followed by the IP address of the Canon. The Canon UFR2  which you are using does not support this protocol. So you need to remove this printer and create a new one, this time selecting HP Jetdirect-Socket for the protocol.

I have same problem with MF8200c series. I tried everything I read here, but nothing helps :/ Any other suggestions?

I m so disappointed firstly during the upgrading I lost all information, than problem with drive. Now problem with printer. I lost 3 working days fighting with Mac :/ Really shame on Apple. I had HP laptop for 8 years without any problem.
