Q: Macbook 12 battery drain in sleep

Hi,

I purchased a new Macbook 12 with Yosemite. I immediately updated it to El Capitan 10.11.0 from App Store.

Then I noticed that my Macbook loses about 6-9% every 6-8 hours in sleep mode!

The recent update to 10.11.1 didn't help. I installed only Chrome and Thunderbird. Blutooth is turned off. Power Nap is turned off, No USB devices, no mouse.

Wi-fi is turned on. FileVault 2 is used with password.

Activity Monitor doesn't show any problems with energy for any applications.

pmset -g shows the following configuration:

standbydelay         10800

standby              1

womp                 0

halfdim              1

hibernatefile        /var/vm/sleepimage

powernap             0

gpuswitch            2

networkoversleep     0

disksleep            10

sleep                1 (sleep prevented by AddressBookSourceSync)

autopoweroffdelay    14400

hibernatemode        3

autopoweroff         1

ttyskeepawake        1

displaysleep         10

acwake               0

lidwake              1

However pmset -g log shows a problem. For some reason my Macbook wakes up every 1-2 hour:

Created MaintenanceWake "mDNSResponder:maintenance"

Any help please?

    Hi,

your log shows nothing wrong i believe. This is the standard procedure, when your mac is at sleep, some timer puts it in darkwake mode every 90 to 120 minutes to refresh your DHCP lease and do some network maintenance.

PID 87(mDNSResponder) Created MaintenanceWake "mDNSResponder:maintenance" 00:00:00  id:0x0xd0000045e [System: DeclUser kDisp]

this is mDNS waking your mac to do the network maintenance

PID 87(mDNSResponder) Released MaintenanceWake "mDNSResponder:maintenance" 00:00:01  id:0x0xd0000045e [System: DeclUser IPushSrvc kCPU kDisp]

This is mDNS that has finished its job.

Then shortly after, your mac returns to sleep and wakes up 90-120 minutes later, and so on

The only solution i know to prevent this (if you really want) is to turn off the wifi when you no longer need it.

    hope this helps.

    Hi,

    Thanks for your reply!

However I think that OS X works incorrectly on my Macbook.

    1. If it wake up every 90-120 minutes from deep hibernation, it also reduce life of SSD, because it reads/writes the content of system memory to SSD.

    2. My Macbook loses 9-12% per 24 hours with closed lid. So it can wait only 9-10 days. But Apple declares 30 days in waiting mode.

I tried to turn off Wi-fi before sleep/hibernate - it has NO EFFECT to battery life.

You've tried a simple SMC reset, right? And have you tried starting it up in safe mode and putting it to sleep still in safe mode to see if it still happens? That could tell you if third party software is the culprit. Otherwise, you're still under warranty and should bring it in.

I know this is an old thread, but anyone made any progress on this? I have a brand new 12" macbook, and find, looking at console logs, that it wakes every 2 hours while on battery. Sleeps normally, wakes to go into standby/hibernate mode, and then wakes every 2 hours after that. Reads the sleep image file, and goes straight back into standby. Wake reason is given as "wake reason: ?", which isn't terribly helpful! Can you verify that you see this behaviour in console logs too?

    Tempted to try Sierra beta...

Me too. I once have the similar problem, and my case is a little bit different, because after I reinstall the system, it works better. So, I suggest you to find help in Apple Genius Bar

Get used to it, battery drain on the macbook is pretty bad. If the diagnostic tool doesn't decent any problem, apple will not consider to look at your machine...
