Q: Can't boot into windows after resizing partitions

I tried to resize my bootcamp and mac partitions recently

I cannot boot into windows now

Get an error about missing MBR

Do you think you could help me here?

I read about using GPT fdisk on another thread

These are the results I got from it

Wanted to check before doing anything

    Loner,

exit code 8 is back again .... here is what I'm seeing in terminal .... just bewildered because I also did a diskutil repairDisk disk0 before doing this check.

I did it in terminal, within OS 10. Not from single user mode or recovery mode. what was the root cause of this again ? I am just checking the Macintosh HD volume.

    Admins-MBP:~ adminuser$ diskutil list

    /dev/disk0 (internal, physical):

I thought to check my RAM and see if I had faulty RAM. I ran 4 itterations of Rember to check and all 4 passed.

is there other hardware checks i can do to make sure the ssd and board do not have any faults/defects ? I want to isolate the problem and try to fix it.

it seems thisi type of issue has been recurring and common on OS 10 in general ....

    1. Is this the stock Apple flash SSD on the 2013 models?

    2. Have you modified any of the KEXTs or any modifications for SSD TRIM?

    3. Some errors are expected, but excessive errors are not a good omen. I have not seen any reported failures of the PCIe Flash yet.

    HI Loner T ....

its a late 2013 model. how can i access the diagnostics for hardware ? they did that once when i visited an apple store to check something else a while ago ...

if i can make sure i dont have defective hardware then i can isolate it to software

    1. yes, 256GB

    2. not that I'm aware of.

    3. hopefully not. just got done running Apple Diagnostics. no hardware issues detected.

I would say this issue is software related. let me ask, do you have this issue and what frequency ?

Should I go into recovery mode and run DU from there instead ? or is it the same thing as running it as admin with OS 10 loaded normally ?

Lastly, given the volume file count, is there any way at all to determine which app or the OS is causing this ?

thanks again for all your help I appreciate it.

Do you have any third-party NTFS software?

Paragon (and many similar tools) modify Apple standard Kernel Extensions (KEXTs). They also cause problems with native file handling. If you can temporarily uninstall Paragon and watch for a week for any signs of inode/disk issues, it will shed some light. Yosemite (and later OS X versions) includes a NTFS checker which can also conflict with Paragon.

ah ... perhaps this is the issue then.

i installed it as part of the suite of apps i got from paragon some time ago.

i hardly ever go into the ntfs partition from within OS 10 ....

so if i uninstall this software, will the changes it made to the kernel extensions revert back to before i installed it ?

If you uninstall Paragon, it is supposed to revert to the standard KEXTs, but at times, it may require a bit of cleanup. Do not use any third-party tools to cleanup KEXTs.

ok thanks for this advice Loner T, it may solve my issue ....

might i ask, how would kext's get cleaned up by the OS ? is there a set of tools in OS 10 that i can use to do that ?

There are no tools, but a re-installation of OSX will replace the errant KEXTs with the ones that work with OSX.

hopefully it wont get to that point. will try out removing the ntfs software first.

would reinstalling OS 10 from recovery cause boot issues with windows ? wondering if it overwrites files needed bootup.

Re-installing OSX from Recovery is the preferred method. The other option is to restore form a backup using Time Machine, which was created before the Paragon installation, but this can cause other issues like putting files in place which are older.
