Q: Final Cut Pro Studio 2.0 Will Not Install on My 2015 iMac

I just purchased a late 2015 27" iMac. I have an older version of Final Cut Pro Studio, Version 2.0. I cannot get it to install on my new iMac. Any suggestions? Can I download a newer version and use the old license number? I really can't afford a newer version of Final Cut right now. Thanks for the input and help.

Compressor is the tool used to compress your video for various final delivery needs.  DVD, H.264 for the web...or to convert camera masters that are h.264 or other files INTO a format that FCP will edit with. It's a pretty major tool.  And QMaster allows Compressor to use multiple processors at the same time. Without it, Compressor only uses one processor.

Ah, good to know; thank you!

So a professional who needs access to their archive of FCP 6 files for editing, can now install FCP 6 in Yosemite and separately purchase Compressor as necessary.  I assume that the upgraded purchased version of Compressor has multiple processor access capabilities.

Looks like the new Compressor sells for $49 on the App Store.

Or do what I and many others do...keep older computers around with older OS versions and the software. I have a 2008 MacPro running 10.6.8 and all the apps. Works as good as it did the day I bought it.  SLOWER than the current hardware, for sure, but still does what I need when I have a client come in with an FCP project that needs work.

" I assume that the upgraded purchased version of Compressor has multiple processor access capabilities."

Never assume. Because this assumption is wrong.  Apple dropped support for multiple processors being used by Compressor. Because it thinks that people no longer need it for some reason. Like they think that people no longer need to output to DVD...or capture to or from tape based sources (DV and HDV they support, but not the other pro formats that I still deal with to this day).

I assume out loud to you, because I know you will provide the most correct information in response!

Does FCP 6 still have these features:

Do you know how I can post a very long Installer Log so that I can post the problem with installing FCS2 into El Capitan?

COPY...PASTE. And then we need to scroll down a LOT to see everything. But do you really need to do this? Most of us are creative cutters who know jack about this deep technical stuff.  Even crash logs, we use the digitalrebellion CRASH Analyzer app for it to tell us what's wrong in plain English...and two sentences.

The Log is much too long to post and MacRumors has a feature where it can be inserted into a sub-post that can be scrolled as needed.  There are techno-geeks who frequent this forum that would understand how to read the log and comment and maybe solve this install problem...

Based on your comments, I am at a dead end at getting FCP 6 to install in El Capitan

Next, I will try to install FCP 6 in Yosemite inside of Parallels in El Capitan, as an alternative.

I had forgotten that I attempted to install FCS2 into Snow Leopard installed in Parallels and Parallels' virtualization of its video card and VRAM prevent the installation of FCS2.

    Hi Seeker,

If you have your old mac with FCS 2.0 installed you might be able to migrate.

That is what I have done ever since rosetta was left out. But I have not updated beyond Mountain Lion.

    Cheers

    Hi EcoGreg,

I do agree with you. There always comes a time you have to move on. The longer you wait, the more problems you get. I have got a related problem, that you or anyone else might want to comment on. I have seen a lot of people struggling to get FCP6/7 installed after a OSX update. So this is more for these people with older macs that do want to upgrade their OSX while keep a copy of FCP6/7 working.

I have a brand new MAC Pro running El Capitan and FCPX. I have an early 2011 MBPro running 10.8.5 with FCS2 without any problems (FCP6,Compressor, DVD Studio, etc.). I do use FCS2 mainly to have access to my older video projects and gradually upgrade them to FCPX.  But keeping running 10.8.5 just for FSCS2 is now becoming more complicated since a lot of other software like security and browser updates are not compatible anymore.

Yesterday I created a dual boot with an El Capitan partition and it seems running smoothly. I now would like to keep FCP6 running on 10.8.5, but take all may other software and files to the El Capitan partition (Adobe CS5, Final Draft9, Office for Mac, etc.).

My Mountain Lion Partition is 650Gb and my El Capitain is 100Gb. I would like to switch that around. What is the best way to do that? I have a Time Machine backup of my 10.8.5 Partition. I'm thinking of:

    1. Deleting my stuff from the 10.8.5 partition, leaving only FCS2.

    2. Reduce the Mountain Lion partition size with Disk Utility.

    3. Increase the size of the El Capitan partition.

    4. Migrate all my software from the Time Machine Back-up to the El Capitan partition.

If this works it would be a good solution for many others that have to hold on to one or two older software packages, while wanting to upgrade for others.

But before I end up in some unexpected problems i would like to hear some thoughts on this.

(I have tried to run the applications on the Mountain Lion Partition starting up from the El Capitan partition and that seems to work after putting serial numbers in again, (except for FCS2), but I don't know if that can have other complications.

    Thans in advance

    Hi Bert

Rosetta has absolutely nothing to do with FCS2 or running any program other than PowerPC only applications. It was a translation program for getting programs written for the Power PC chips to run on the Intel chip. Apple introduced "Universal" programming and encouraged developers to switch over while still supporting older computers. Universal programs, if they were written properly, do not require Rosetta.

In later OSs including the latest El Capitan, Apple has installed "RED FLAGS" to not install certain programs including PowerPC programs and there is list for do not install in the Core Services plist as Jeremy Johnstone found. This is a weird place to "Hide" it, as FCP 6 and FCS2 are "Intel" apps and do not require any PPC components. AFAIK this list only for certain versions of FCS/FCP/DVDSP/Live Type/Logic as listed in PPC Requirements plist. AFAIK this does not block FCP7.

So Rosetta is not needed. It was only for PPC apps. FCP6/FCS2 were made for Intel chips. Apple issued a special FCS1/FCP5.14 "Intel" disk set for those people who had purchased FCS1 for their PPC Macs but later had purchased the new Intel based computers. I made the switch from a G5 Power Mac to the Mac Pro in 2006, so I got the upgrade disk. The original FCS1 was a PPC app so FCP5.0-5.1.3 were not able to run on the Intel platform.

I never owned FCP6. I waited and upgraded from 5.14 to FCP7 and FCS3 (Apple never used the designator FCS3 but everyone called it that).

Just guessing that FCP6 has lots of issues and Apple is really trying to keep folks from installing it on later OSs, so they hide the do not install flags.

Lots of misconceptions about what Rosetta did. You only needed it for PPC only apps not the Universal apps.

    Hope this helps, Greg

    Hi Bert,

May I make the suggestion that you also make a "Clone" of the disk you want to repartition. I use Carbon Copy Cloner. Time Machine is great for backing up individual files or folders, but really slow for restoring whole disks and downgrading OSs.

CCC would allow you to "Clone" each partition separately, and then you could erase and repartition as you wanted, then clone back to the new sizes.

So here I am assuming that you are running the 10.8.5 on your older MBP. If you have a brand new MP6.1, you will not be able to boot it from the 10.8 disk/volume. Macs are not able to boot from versions of OS earlier than what they came with. Actually, your MP should be able to boot from Yosemite and run fine as that was the current OS when the new MP were launched, but Apple may restrict this via updated EFI boot kext on later manufactured units. Don't really know. Apple's new SIP protections prevent altering kext unless you turn it off.

    Just my 2cents worth.

As to installing FCP6/FCS2, I suggest you try making a Disk Image of the FCP6 installer. I have installed FCP7 on Mavericks, Yosemite and now El Capitan from a Disk Image (.dmg) file or using Terminal with no real issues except that the Installer wants Motion4 installed at the same time. These were interlinked applications, so when you run the FCP installer it will flag  "Installation Failed" but FCP7 runs fine. All of the other FCS programs will no longer run in EC. I imagine Apple has "Hidden" "Red Flags" for them like they did FCS2/FCP6,etc…

Since I do not own FCP6 I cannot help with the Install other that to say that I have installed 7 via both Terminal "mpkg" and via a Disk Image. Both worked for me and should bypass the "Red Flags" AFAIK.

Not sure if MichealLAX has tried either install method. Terminal is very powerful.

If you use Migration Assistant, then this should also allow the apps to be installed, but I stay away from MA and do not recommend its use.

You will need your "Key Code". Also you may need to bypass "Gate Keeper" as early FCS is not recognized as signed by approved Developer.

Modern OSs have millions of lines of code, so Apple could install a Red Flag anywhere in the chain during installation of an app. There can easily be hardware issues running older apps.

    Intelligent Assistance's 7toX app will convert FCP 6 & 7 projects to FCPX. http://assistedediting.intelligentassistance.com/7toX/

You export an XML from FCP then 7toX will create an FCPXML file that can be opened in newer OSs / newer computer, provided you have the media files mounted. I keep all my media on external drives.

Really won't edit in FCP7 anymore if I can avoid it.

    Hope this helps, Greg

    Hi MichaelLAX

Man I hate trying to read the logs in that window, ugh!

You are running into sandbox errors, so first. These are NS(NextStep) errors. No time right now to run them down for you, but you can search the web for each error and solution.

    Here are some suggestions…

Did you turn off "GateKeeper" and set Allow apps downloaded from anywhere in the System Preferences>Privacy&Security Pane?

You may need to temporarily turn off SIP in El Capitan.

I suggest you only try to install FCP not any other apps

Make a disk image of the install disk

    Try that

Or use Terminal "mpkg" I think the Jeremy J articles have instructions. They are available elsewhere as well.

The CoreServices PPC restrictions are still in El Capitan so assume you removed them already.

    Got some deadlines, sorry.

    Hope this helps, Greg

Utilizing just these two tips, the first FCS2 disk has installed and it is continuing on to the remaining disks!
