Q: Worried about error 53, already using 9.2.

I cracked my iPhone 6+ last year and had a third party repairer fix it. I don't know if there was any damage to the Touch ID button or if the tech replaced it but I'm already using iOS 9.2 with no problems. Should I upgrade to 9.2.1?

    I didn't get much of an answer at all beyond you thinking you are entitled to judge my repairing the phone outwith the "rules". Once again: yes, no, or maybe would have sufficed. I only asked on this forum because you people presumably have some knowledge about the subject. Perhaps you do but to treat someone like that when they're only asking for advice, well, it's disappointing. It was observed that this forum is sponsored by Apple. It reflects quite poorly on them that their forum members treat people in such a pompous way. I just wanted a conclusive answer, I dunno why you get so offended that someone questions Apple. Very strange. It's brand loyalty in the extreme, I suppose. Sad that something like an electronics brand encourages such pious attitudes.

    If my moniker was "Applerules", presumably you would have been super-friendly and even though I'd gone against Apple by repairing the phone elsewhere, you would have given me all the help you could without any rancour or condescension?

    Good grief, really??????

     

    Sigh. Screen cracked (still don't know how), I reported it to Apple, they say "There is no Apple store near you, go to this other repairer who is officially able to help you on our behalf". I go there. They say "Oh no, we can't help you, go back to Apple. I do so. Apple tell me to buy a new phone. I decide not to do that and find a local repairer on my own who does the work for a reasonable price. Phone worked fine and remains so. Today I read about error 53 and wonder if I'm at risk from it if I upgrade to 9.2.1 (I already use 9.2). I do not know if the touch id button was replaced by the repairer I employed to fix the phone (but I will be finding out). Apparently the error is caused by the Touch ID button being replaced or whatever.

     

    Now, if the knowledgable among you could put aside your offence at my having the phone repaired myself (and my username, sigh), I just wanted an opinion - some conjecture about whether I should upgrade to 9.2.1. I didn't ask for the editorials that spurred on this entertaining yet ridiculous back and forth on this thread. Rather than giving me the benefit of your knowledge (it's a help forum for chrissakes) the responders focused on my repairing the phone outwith Apple and my choice of username.

     

    As someone said, the circumstances are irrelevant, I just wanted some friendly advice from those in the know. Apple has such a friendly image, I assumed this would be a formality but apparently not.

    Most of the responders here are just obvious trolls. It's easy to sit at your keyboard and harass people who are asking honest questions and hoping for honest answers. One word can describe them: snide. And like you said, they'd be begging for help and understanding if the same thing happened to them. This is not your fault - it's Apple's. With hundreds of millions of iPhones sold, there's just no way that everybody with an iPhone will be within even a hundred miles of an Apple store or authorized repair service. Plus Apple has gone way overboard in its security systems, in my opinion - which is how I got locked out of my computer (El Capitan) for the first time in all the years I've had Macs, starting with the G3. As if all of us work for the NSA, FBI, some police department, or, say, Target or Chase - all of which (and many many more) have been hacked anyway. It won't be long before we read of hackers who have broken the iPhone's security system.

     

    Like a couple of others have advised, I wouldn't upgrade until you know what the repair did to your phone. Even then it could be risky, since Apple is the biggest control freak of a tech corporation ever (like, you don't own the music you buy on iTunes, you're licensed to play it). If you don't absolutely need to upgrade, don't - don't upgrade just for the sake of upgrading. You could easily get by until the iPhone 7 comes out, if you're someone who buys the newest version every time. Bottom line - don't upgrade unless it's vital; instead wait for the new phone, probably late this year or sometime in 2017.

    Thanks, that makes sense. I'll stay as I am until I can change to something else. I have no need to install the latest iOS, it's usually just trouble at the beginning of a release anyway.

     

    Thanks for taking time to reply, I must say I agree entirely with your critique of Apple. If I stay with Apple products, I definitely won't be using this forum for help. Smug, portentous and yes, snide is how I would describe some of the users who delight in other people's misfortune.

    Error 53 specifically means that the touch id sensor is no longer paired with the encrypted fingerprint store. If touch ID works then you should have no problem upgrading. The problem comes when touch id no longer works. If you had the screen replaced before upgrading to 9.2 and you had no problem, 9.2.1 should not be a problem either.
